On April 30, 2026, the CAL FIRE L2881 Honor Guard Pipes & Drums, in coordination with the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, assisted the family of Retired CAL FIRE Unit Chief William “Bill” Sager in paying their respects. A funeral mass was held at St. Joseph Church in Redding, where Chief Sager's service was commemorated. As a retired unit chief in Butte County and a Navy veteran, Chief Sager later relocated to Shasta County. During his time in the Navy, he served as a lieutenant in the Vietnam War, earning multiple commendations for his service, prior to embarking on a decades-long career in fire service. Following the mass, a procession was held to the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, where Chief Sager was laid to rest. Chief Sager was deeply respected and loved by his family, friends, and colleagues in the CAL Fire community.
