This afternoon, I had the privilege of participating in the Fresno County Peace Officer memorial ceremony, which annually honors law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony provides a special VIP area for the families of the fallen, serving as a poignant reminder that their loved ones' sacrifices will be remembered forever.

On April 30, 2026, the CAL FIRE L2881 Honor Guard Pipes & Drums, in coordination with the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, assisted the family of Retired CAL FIRE Unit Chief William “Bill” Sager in paying their respects. A funeral mass was held at St. Joseph Church in Redding, where Chief Sager's service was commemorated. As a retired unit chief in Butte County and a Navy veteran, Chief Sager later relocated to Shasta County. During his time in the Navy, he served as a lieutenant in the Vietnam War, earning multiple commendations for his service, prior to embarking on a decades-long career in fire service. Following the mass, a procession was held to the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, where Chief Sager was laid to rest. Chief Sager was deeply respected and loved by his family, friends, and colleagues in the CAL Fire community.

The Cal Fire L2881 Honor Guard Pipes and Drums concluded the 2026 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland, paying tribute to 204 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. Nine Cal Fire fallen firefighters, namely Daniel “Danny” Cook, David Donley, Curtis Tate Jr., Mark Dale Miller (RRU), Mark Edira (BEU), Robert McLaughlin (SDU), Leroy “Howard” Hedges (SAC), Paul Rotondaro, and Carol Paul Thomas (MMU), were memorialized, with their families joining to honor their sacrifices at a national level.

Yesterday afternoon, CAL FIRE L2881 Honor Guard Pipes & Drums, alongside CPF Pipes and Drums, assisted the family of Wendy Watkins' celebration of life. Many of her family, close friends, and CAL FIRE personnel from SLU were also in attendance. Firefighter Wendy Watkins lost her courageous battle with cancer on March 19. Rest easy, Wendy; we'll take it from here.

Yesterday, CAL FIRE L2881 Honor Guard & Pipes and Drums, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, rendered final honors to Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Over 3,000 attendees paid respects to the late Congressman during his memorial service held at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico.

Notable figures in attendance included prominent national and state leaders, such as Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and U.S. Senator Adam Schiff.

CAL FIRE L2881 Honor Guard Pipes and Drums presented colors at the 2025 Southern Region Director’s Awards Ceremony, held Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Among the honors presented was the Superior Accomplishment Award, recognizing superior performance resulting in exceptional contributions to CAL FIRE, clearly demonstrating ingenuity, innovation, and creativity beyond normal job expectations.
