AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a community since 1881. For more than 130 years, we have worked together as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families. AAUW California was founded in 1921. Even way back then, our San Francisco branch, the second oldest in the nation, had already been around for 30 years, having been founded in 1886. Our membership is open to everyone, men and women, who supports breaking down barriers and empowering all women and girls to achieve their highest potential.

⭐ California is shining bright! ⭐

Congratulations to our AAUW California branches recognized as FY2026 AAUW National Five-Star Awardees!

Nearly 85% of California’s 104 branches earned at least one star, and 36 earned all five—representing 25% of all Five-Star branches nationwide.

But the stars represent more than recognition. They reflect the work AAUW members are doing in communities across California—advancing opportunities for women and girls, developing leaders, supporting education, advocating for change, and building stronger communities.

Whether you’re a longtime member or just learning about AAUW, this is what local action and collective impact can look like.

🌟 Congratulations to our California branches and the members who make this work possible!

🎥 Watch the moment HR 132 was officially presented on the Assembly floor! 🏛️

We are so proud of the incredible young women and advocates from AAUW who championed House Resolution 132 to declare September Young Women’s Reproductive Health Awareness Month. Seeing their dedication to health equity, education, and research recognized at the State Capitol is truly inspiring! 👏💙

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage of the first responders and all those who came together in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

We hold in our thoughts the families and communities whose lives were forever changed.

We remember.

From Orinda to the State Capitol!

Students from Miramonte High School in Orinda, supported by the AAUW Orinda-Moraga-Lafayette Branch, turned research and advocacy into action. Their work helped inspire HR 132, introduced by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan to recognize September 2026 as Young Women’s Reproductive Health Awareness Month.

The students also worked with AAUW California Public Policy & Advocacy interns to research reproductive health misinformation—and recently brought their work to Sacramento.

👏 A great example of AAUW mentorship, advocacy, and young women making their voices heard.

AAUW California joins the nation and the world in mourning the passing of Gloria Steinem.

For more than half a century, Gloria helped change the conversation about women’s equality. She co-founded Ms. magazine and spent her life advancing women’s voices, rights, and political power.

We honor her extraordinary legacy—and carry the work forward.

Rest in power, Gloria.

💵 The gender wage gap is about more than a paycheck.

When women are paid less, the impact can compound over a lifetime—affecting savings, retirement security, economic independence, and the ability to build wealth.

Knowledge is one tool for changing that.

AAUW offers resources and webinars designed to help women strengthen their economic security, build financial confidence, and advocate for themselves in the workplace.

Through AAUW’s Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, you can explore programs and resources focused on topics including salary negotiation, financial literacy, and creating greater economic opportunity for women.

Closing the gender wage gap requires systemic change—but equipping women with information and tools matters, too.

Learn. Share. Advocate.
