Featured Speaker:
Drucilla “D.D.” Salazar
Oral Historian, Chickasaw Nation Heritage Preservation Division

Drucilla “D.D.” Salazar is a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and serves as the Oral Historian for the Chickasaw Nation’s Heritage Preservation Division. In this role, she helps preserve and honor Chickasaw history by collecting oral stories from Chickasaw elders and citizens, safeguarding family histories, cultural knowledge, and traditional ways of life for future generations.

D.D. also supports the meaningful work of returning boarding school records to former Chickasaw boarding school students and their families. Through this important process, she helps families reconnect with pieces of their own histories and supports continued healing and remembrance.

Raised in the oilfields of West Texas, D.D. developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family, community, language, and culture. Her Chickasaw heritage was nurtured from an early age by her mother, Rose Shields-Jefferson, a fluent Chickasaw speaker who instilled in her a lasting pride in their language and traditions.

Today, D.D. resides in Ada, Oklahoma, with her husband, David. She is surrounded by her children and grandchildren, who continue to inspire her commitment to preserving Chickasaw history and culture for generations to come.

Join us August 8 as D.D. shares her knowledge and experience on the topic of Indian Boarding Schools.

Chokma, everyone!

Just a reminder that our next California Chickasaw meeting is this Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM in Sacramento.

Meeting Details
Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: Hilton Sacramento Arden West
2200 Harvard St
Sacramento, CA 95815

We are also very excited to share that Wilson Seawright will be joining us!

Wilson is the Genealogy Manager for the Chickasaw Nation and an archivist at the Holisso Research Center within the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma. He manages the Chickasaw Nation Genealogy Program, which helps individuals trace their ancestry back to the Dawes Rolls for tribal citizenship. He also serves as Chairman of the Chickasaw Historical Society board and is deeply involved in cultural preservation, historical education, and helping Chickasaw families reconnect with their histories.

For those of us here in California, this is an especially meaningful opportunity. Many of us live far from Chickasaw Nation, and it is not always easy to access in-person cultural, historical, and genealogical resources. Having Wilson here with us in Sacramento gives our California community a rare chance to learn directly from someone who works closely with Chickasaw records, history, and family connections.

This will be a wonderful chance to ask questions, learn more about Chickasaw genealogy, and connect more deeply with our shared history.

We hope to see you there!

Chokma!

On Saturday, October 18, the Northern California Chickasaw Citizen Connection proudly hosted our 12th Annual Picnic at Lake Natoma Inn in Folsom, California.

This year’s gathering was especially meaningful as we welcomed Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby and Lt. Governor Chris Anoatubby as two of our special guests, which is an incredible honor for our Northern California community. A highlight of the event was the presentation of an eagle feather to Governor Anoatubby, a significant and deeply meaningful moment for all in attendance.

We were also honored to hold a Blanket Ceremony recognizing Bill Morgan and Desiree Collum for their dedication and service to our community. Their contributions have made a lasting impact, and it was a privilege to celebrate them in this way.

We were also privileged to have the Chickasaw Nation Dance Troupe perform, including traditional stomp dancing. As always, we deeply value the opportunity for Chickasaw citizens and families to connect, share, and celebrate our heritage together. Moments like these remind us that no matter the distance, our culture and community remain strong.

Yakoke to everyone who attended and helped make this year’s gathering so special. We look forward to continuing to grow and connect with our Northern California Chickasaw community.
