Natomas Black Parents United

Natomas Black Parents United We believe all students can achieve academic excellence and realize their highest potential through ambitious instruction and strong support networks.

Natomas Black Parents United is a grassroots group created and maintained by volunteers to support the needs of our highly capable students within the Natomas Unified School District. Our mission is to raise awareness about culturally sensitive issues relating to the education of Black students and engage stakeholders to transform the system to ensure a high quality education for every student.

05/26/2026

On 05/13/26, the NBPU School Safety Task Force showed up to the NUSD Board Meeting in our safety vests and made one thing clear: parents are tired of empty statements, reactive responses, and performative concern.

Four parents stood before the board and demanded REAL change. We called for a community-led school safety plan that focuses on:
• Prevention
• Mental health
• Accountability
• Parent engagement
• School climate
• Real intervention BEFORE violence happens

The community is watching now. The parents are organized now. And we are NOT backing down.
Our schools. Our community. Our responsibility.

If you’re tired of complaining in group chats and social media comments but not showing up, this is your sign. Get involved. The School Safety Task Force is just getting started.

Y’all thought we were done 😆? We’re just getting started. The entire community is organizing. Natomas students deserve safe schools. And this time, we are moving with strategy, structure, and action.

Our School Safety Task Force is coming back next week and this is where the real work begins.

📅 Thursday, May 7, 2026
⏰ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Zoom)

This meeting is about turning community voices into real solutions.
We will:
• Finalize our working groups
• Identify leaders
• Set clear priorities and action steps
• Build a plan to move forward together

Then we take it a step further:
📣 Wed. May 13, 2026 – NUSD Board Meeting
We will show up. We will speak. We will be heard.
Because there is strength in numbers. And when Black people organize, systems have to respond.

We need:
✊🏾Parents ready to stand up
✊🏾Educators ready to support
✊🏾Community members ready to push for change

There is a place for everyone in this work.
This is about student safety, community engagement AND community power ✊🏾.
Let’s not just talk about it.
Let’s be about it. Action now‼️

Thank you to the 50+ parents, students, educators, and community members who joined our School Safety Task Force meeting! We are one step closer to creating a coordinated, community-driven approach to school safety. Hearing lived experiences spoken with honesty was refreshing. We need to be in the same room having these conversations for the betterment of our students and our community.

To those who have been doing this work for years, upholding the mantle and carrying it forward, we thank you. Your commitment does not go unnoticed. To those who are new to this space, welcome. There is room for you here. We need your voice, your skills, and your experience.

We will be following up soon with next steps. If you signed up to join the task force, we will be reaching out directly. Next Steps: We will begin organizing into 5 core working groups to focus on specific areas of school safety and develop actionable solutions. A meeting invite will be sent soon. Please keep an eye out for more information. Thank you again for showing up, leaning in, and standing together for our children.

Take a look 👀 at our agenda. We are honored to introduce two powerful voices who are helping guide the School Safety Task Force:

🎤 Mr. Raymond Lozada
Executive Director, Office of Safe Schools Program
Mr. Lozada brings real, proven strategies from Sacramento City Unified, where his work focuses on addressing inequities and redefining school safety through community voice, accountability, and systemic change.

🎤 Ms. Maria Madril Hernandez
Executive Director, Central Valley Movement Building Organizing Institute (CVMBOI)
Ms. Hernandez is on the front lines of organizing for educational justice. Her work is centered on empowering communities, developing leaders, and dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline.

We are deeply grateful to both of them for taking the time to pour into our Natomas community during such a critical moment. Their knowledge and experience are exactly what we need right now.

💬 This is where we move from frustration to solutions.
💬 This is where community voice turns into real change.

Thank you to everyone who joined our meeting last night! It was amazing to see the community show up. Even in the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy, our community showed strength, unity, and care for one another ✊🏾. It was powerful to come together, hold space, and hear directly from parents, educators, and community members about school safety. Thank you to Elika Bernard and Leia Schenk for providing much-needed support and guidance to the victim’s family.

We also appreciate Board President Micah Grant for joining us and engaging in a meaningful conversation with the community 🙌🏾. Thank you to Trustee Noel Mora for attending and showing support as well. We will continue the conversation with our other board members in Natomas and Twin Rivers. Family, our hearts are heavy. We are grieving the tragic loss of a young life in our Natomas community. A child was taken from us, and this loss is being felt by families, students, and educators across our community.

We believe it is important to lean in and come together. This is when community matters most. This is a time to:
• Hold space for those who are hurting
• Support our children who may be scared or confused
• Stand with our educators and families
• Show up for one another

Our upcoming meeting will not be business as usual. It will be a space for connection, reflection, and unity. As a community, we are stronger when we come together. Our children need to see that. Our families need to feel that.

If you are able, we invite you to join us virtually (via Zoom). If not, please take the time you need. You are not alone. We are in this together.

In Solidarity,
Natomas Black Parents United ❤️🖤💚
