The Sacramento Bee hosted a back-to-school supply drive and Q&A session on Tuesday to answer questions about the upcoming school year and educational challenges facing the Sacramento region.

The event featured education reporters Tarini Mehta, who covers higher education, and Chaewon Chung, who covers K-12 education. The Bee partnered with Volunteers of Americaโ€™s Operation Backpack initiative to donate school supplies to low-income families.

Beating the heat, together. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Last Thursday, VOA โ€” alongside our SMUD Outreach Specialist and Mending of Mothers โ€” hit the streets of downtown Sacramento to bring relief to our unhoused neighbors during the extreme summer heat. Together with volunteers, we handed out more than 100 "Stay Cool" kits, ice-cold water, backpacks, and tents to individuals in need.

A big thank you to our friends at UBS, whose employees helped assemble the kits and volunteered alongside us throughout the event.

This outreach is part of a larger effort with 30 other nonprofit organizations through the Nonprofit Collaborative's Call to Action: Extreme Heat Outreach initiative, hosting events across Sacramento County all month long.

We're grateful to our partners and volunteers โ€” their dedication made this possible. ๐Ÿ“ธ Swipe through for a look at the day.

๐Ÿก Big thanks to a generous partner!

A grant from the Einstein Jewish Community Services will help VOA continue protecting seniors at risk of homelessness, with dignity and respect.

This funding sustains our Senior Safe House, providing safe shelter during times of crisis, plus financial literacy and fraud prevention sessions that help seniors build confidence and stability.

We're grateful to EJCS for helping our seniors find safety, stability, and renewed independence. ๐Ÿ’™

We've been selected as a 2026 AARP California Community Challenge grantee! ๐ŸŽ‰

This grant powers our Rocklin Community Support Project: free, on-demand rides for seniors (62+) in VOA's low-income housing across greater Sacramento.

Using GoGoGrandparent's phone-based service (no app needed), residents can get safe rides to medical appointments, the pharmacy, the grocery store, and more, helping them stay healthy, independent, and connected.

Thank you, AARP! ๐Ÿ’™

This spring, SAFE Credit Union has shown up for our community in a big way, and we couldn't be more grateful. ๐Ÿ’™

During their Month of Service in May, SAFE volunteers brought their energy to Mather, helping freshen up the space with a fresh coat of paint. Then in June, in honor of Elder Abuse Awareness Month, their ERG group came out to our Senior Safe House to assemble hygiene kits, organize donation and supply spaces, and beautify the yard for the seniors we serve.

Two months, two locations, one incredible team. Thank you, SAFE Credit Union, for your continued commitment to our neighbors. ๐Ÿงก

Thank you to the Nevada State Apartment Association for their generous donation of move-in kits for our ReStart program!

These kits are already making a difference for our newly housed clients, who are settling into their new homes with the essentials they need to get started. With the right support, they can focus on building a brighter future with dignity and hope.

We are so grateful for partners like NVSAA who help turn housing into home. ๐Ÿ’™

Today's Sacramento Senior Safe House sponsorship is made in loving memory of Harvey McGarry, gifted by his daughter and former VOA board member, Judy McGarry, in honor of his birthday.

Judy's heartfelt generosity provides a full day of care, safety, and comfort for six seniors โ€” a beautiful tribute that carries forward Harvey's legacy of kindness and compassion. It's gifts like these that make our Senior Safe House a place of hope and healing.

Happy Birthday, Harvey. Your memory continues to touch lives. ๐Ÿ’™

A huge thank you to City of Rancho Cordova Government for bringing volunteers out to our Mather campus for the third annual Spring Service Day!

Volunteers repainted 4,300 linear feet of railings โ€” creating a safer, more welcoming home for the families and children VOA serves through our Transitional Housing Program.

This is community in action. Thank you, Rancho Cordova!
