Access to primary healthcare is an important element of maintaining good health. However, to promote total health the whole person and their environment must be considered. When basic needs like food and shelter are not met, children and their families experience poorer physical health and may experience negative short- and long-term psychological side effects from accumulated stress. eptember 2013, the Resource Desk seeks to address social factors that impact a family's health. We connect families to local social service agencies and nonprofits who provide vital resources. Trained UC Davis undergraduate volunteer advocates are stationed in the UC Davis Pediatric Clinic at WellSpace Health in Oak Park. Advocates partner with families to identify non-medical areas of interest. Advocates match their clients with local resources and support the family through the process of connecting to and obtaining services. Advocates are prepared to connect families with a variety of resources including food, clothing, childcare and employment. Since the Oak Park site launch, in February 2014, UC Davis undergraduate advocates have worked with over 600 families and connected with over 100 different Sacramento area organizations!
