A message from Pastor Kim:

“Today felt like a ‘best day’ as days go.

It was horribly hot and many of the booths this year seemed more focused on community service providers rather than the crazy fun vendors one often experiences at PRIDE. And we didn’t do a craft project….

So what made it so good, you might be asking?

Deep and meaningful connections.

People just showing up at our table looking for someone to witness their life and hear their story.

“What does ‘inclusive’ mean to you?” I kept hearing this question from people of all ages. But what I really heard was a need to know if they would be welcomed.

I began to introduce myself as “pastor Kim” which I rarely do. I talked about a vision of the peaceable kingdom. Phrases like “sacred community” and “For Everyone Born a Place at OUR Table” rolled off my tongue and people engaged. There were long and meaningful conversations where people shared deep hurts and profound longing. The word “community” came up a lot and the reality is that people are longing for it.

A young man who showed up curiously to see what PRIDE was like and shared that he didn’t agree with their lifestyle…and I reminded myself, as much as him, that Jesus never said to anyone to go get themselves all squared away before coming to talk to be with him.

He spoke with those who were without community and he offered it. Immediately and graciously. He offered connection, acceptance and a sacred promise to walk with them.

When a young man asked what we offer, all I could think to say was an opportunity to learn and practice a love that doesn’t depend on ‘agreement’ but rather a kind of love that meets our longing for connection and belonging. Belonging to ourselves and belonging to the Sacred.

Finding belonging and a love that makes us want to shine for others.

Today there were probably 5-7 people that stopped back by the booth later in the day to say goodbye. But I felt the deeper message. The unspoken words…

“We shared an important moment”

“Something beautiful happened”

“I felt seen and heard”

“You changed me a little today”.

I am deeply grateful for the reminder that we are travelers together on this journey of being human. We get stronger by lifting each other. I learn more than I teach, I’m healed more than I heal and I often learn more about loving from the very people the world has deemed as “unloveable”.

May we walk humbly.
May we be present to what is rather than looking for perfection. May we remember that we are the reflection of a beautiful God who never makes mistakes.
May we find new depths of love within ourselves during this lifetime.

And may we remember that the face of God is often found in the unfamiliar and uncomfortable places.

Pull up a chair. The table is set. Jesus is inviting. And there is always room for one more.
