The vast working landscapes that characterize California’s beauty and support our way of life are at risk. More than a third of California’s 100 million acres of land is rangeland that not only supports livestock, wildlife, and rural communities, but also sequesters carbon and recharges groundwater; and it’s disappearing at an alarming rate. Over the past 10 years, 784 square miles of open landscapes – roughly the size of Los Angeles and San Diego combined – were converted to industry and housing. Once developed, these natural landscapes with all their beauty and benefits are gone forever. The California Rangeland Trust is dedicated to safeguarding these rangelands that feed the soul and provide vital resources, ensuring California continues to matter.

Last Thursday, we gathered for our signature Reunir event at The Station in Los Alamos, and it was truly a great evening!

Santa Barbara County is a place where history, heritage, and a shared love of the land bring people together. Reunir was a beautiful reminder of just that. It is a chance to reconnect with old friends, welcome new ones, and celebrate the people and traditions that make our ranching community so special.

In recognition of the United Nations’ International Year of the Woman Farmer, we were honored to hear from multiple generations of women in ranching as they shared their stories, experiences, and perspectives on the past, present, and future of the industry. From honoring the traditions passed down through generations to embracing new ideas and emerging technologies, their voices offered a meaningful look at the strength and resilience of women carrying California’s ranching legacy forward.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their stories, and helped make this gathering so memorable. That’s the heart of Reunir, to gather, reconnect, and celebrate what brings us together.

Last week, the Rangeland Trust, The Buckeye Conservancy, and the Humboldt County CattleWomen hosted a special evening in Eureka featuring a screening of You Just Can’t See Them From the Road and a reading from Andy Westfall’s new book, Humboldt Heartland: Life, Land, and Legacy.

It was a wonderful evening spent with both new and old friends, all sharing an appreciation for the traditions, culture, and landscapes that make the West so special—and a commitment to preserving them for generations to come.

Celebrating the community behind the conservation of Spanish Ranch!

We recently gathered in the Cuyama Valley to celebrate an incredible conservation milestone: the protection of Spanish Ranch and the Doiron family’s commitment to conserving this special working landscape for generations to come.

This achievement represents what’s possible when a community comes together. More than 140 private donors, seven private foundations, and numerous public and nonprofit partners helped make this conservation project a reality.

It was a meaningful day celebrating the land, the people who care for it, and the many partners who believe in protecting California’s working ranches, agricultural heritage, and open spaces. 🌾

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make this conservation effort possible—and to the Doiron family for being such important stewards of Spanish Ranch.
