When There Are Nine is a nonprofit dedicated to enriching and empowering the lives of girls and women pursuing a profession in the legal world by providing resources, support, and programs for advancing inclusion and equity in the law. Our name is derived from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s answer to the question, “When will there be enough women on the United States Supreme Court? People are shock

ed. But there’d be nine men, and no one has ever raised a question about that.”

Many groups and nonprofits support women, but few address the challenges which continue to exist for women before, during, and after their law education. WTA9 will address this important issue by helping girls and women investigate and pursue a legal career while addressing the challenges they face with mentoring, community support, scholarships, and advocacy. In doing so, we hope to create a space where all are welcomed, valued, and can succeed.

🌟 Deborah Ikenador 🌟

One of our Spring Book Scholarship recipients. Deborah is a law student at Lincoln Law School of Sacramento. As a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, her arrival in the United States at 12 marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in her life. Faced with the challenges of adapting to a new culture and learning English, she navigated the complexities of assimilation with determination and resilience. This early experience fueled her commitment to inclusivity and equality.

She has interned at the U.C. Merced Law Clinic, immersed herself in community service as a Corps member with City Year Sacramento, and played a pivotal role in the “First but not Alone” movement, empowering first-generation students to persist in their educational journeys. Additionally, she led the PAVE program, collaborating with local schools to enhance educational opportunities for K-12 students.
As she embarks on her law school journey, she remains steadfast in her commitment to advancing inclusivity and equality for all. She plans to continue this commitment during her law school career and beyond, as she is particularly interested in pursuing a career in family and immigration law. Recognizing the unique challenges individuals face in these areas, she is dedicated to advocating for justice, fairness, and equitable treatment. Her goal is to contribute to the legal profession by championing the rights of underrepresented individuals and ensuring that every person, regardless of their background, receives the legal representation they deserve.

🌟Kyndall Banales 🌟

One of our Spring Book Scholarship recipients. Kyndall is a third- year student, graduating in May 2024 at Pacific McGeorge School of Law. Before and throughout her law school journey, she has been dedicated to advancing inclusivity and equality for all in the legal profession. At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she was an active member of the Women in Business Association (“WIB”) and Gamma Phi Beta sorority. These organizations reaffirmed the importance of lifting others up, specifically women.
She has served at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and worked with the Women’s Caucus organization. Her service at the CDI involved opening and maintaining the center as a safe space for different communities to study and connect. Moreover, she worked with the Women’s Caucus, an on-campus organization focused on uplifting women in law, by hand-making blankets for the Victim’s Resource Center.
In her off-campus experience, she was recently awarded the Unity Bar scholarship on behalf of the Women Lawyers of Sacramento for her community service endeavors at Wellspring Women’s Center. For a year and a half, she spent every Friday supporting the women and children of the Oak Park community, serving meals and providing support to those facing food and housing insecurity.
All her experiences before and during law school demonstrate her commitment to the advancement of inclusivity and equality for all in the legal profession, particularly for women. She has actively sought opportunities to support and uplift women in the law. As she transitions into the legal field in late 2024, she plans to continue inserting herself into spaces to advance women in the legal profession.

🌟 Cearra Clark 🌟

One of our Spring Book Scholarship recipients. She is a 2nd-year law student at Lincoln Law School. She has volunteered at various organizations, including Ready4Change, counseling students who were at risk for addiction and gang violence, and the California Youth Crisis Line as a Crisis Counselor providing support and resources to guardians and youth facing trauma and crises. She has worked with Active Minds, educating young adults on mental health resources, the Children’s Receiving Home, Roseville Superior Courts Self-Help Center, and Volunteers in Victim Assistance.

She is a member of our Woman’s Justice Society and currently externs with a Probate Commissioner and also serves as the secretary for Lincoln Lambda, which is an organization associated with Lambda Legal that promotes representation of the LGBQT+ within the legal community. Lastly, she is a Friday Night Review Coordinator, providing 1L students with resources and lectures to support students from all backgrounds in obtaining an accessible law degree. She is committed to promoting an inclusive environment for legal professionals and offering inclusively equality to those in need of legal services. Her goal upon graduation is to obtain a position in a government or non-profit organization where she can serve her community in a meaningful manner on impactful issues.

🏡 Favorite Place: Home! Home is where my dogs and husband are!

🌟 Emma Rodgers🌟

One of our Spring Book Scholarship recipients. She is a 4th-year law student at Lincoln Law School. She is the president of the Women’s Justice Society, and is coordinating a mentorship program with Women Lawyers of Sacramento and tutoring services via Tutor-in-Law, a minority and women-owned business. Apart from the mentorship program, she has also coordinated the Lincoln Law School Food Drive, which donates non-perishables to the International Rescue Committee and helps sponsor classmates to participate in Run for a Safe Haven hosted by My Sister’s House. She also balances being a single mother to an incredible 10-year-old boy, a job at Phoong Law, and maintains top grades. Being a single mother to her son was one of the forces driving her to go to law school.

Further, her commitment to inclusivity is not limited to being a woman pursuing this career path but also as a student who does not fit into the current stereotype of an attorney. She is a minority, future first-generation attorney with facial piercings, colored hair, and tattoos. She expresses, “Though it was daunting at first to pursue this degree while maintaining my style, I aspire to be an inspiration to those who look similar to me to show they can excel not just in law school but in the legal field. I enjoy the opportunity to encourage those to pursue this career path regardless of their looks because being a zealous advocate should not be confined to pre-conceived notions of how an attorney should look”.

The "When There Are 9 Book Scholarship" empowers and supports women and minority law students who exhibit exceptional promise and commitment in pursuing a legal education. Our primary mission with our book scholarship is to relieve the financial challenges often tied to acquiring textbooks and study materials for law school, thus enabling scholars to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their studies, free from financial constraints.

Our Story
WE DO IT FOR FREDERIKA MAY

Attending law school in the 1940s, Frederika, the Great-Aunt of our Founding Member Jennifer Mouzis, was forced to due to discrimination from her professors and fellow students who insisted that she belonged in the kitchen, not the courtroom. While we have made great strides to include women and other marginalized groups in the law, many of the outdated views faced by Fredrika continue to exist. We have come so far, and yet have much further to go before we see a truly inclusive and equal environment for women in the law.

WTA9 exists because Aunt Frederika showed us that qualified women are often overlooked or left behind. Icons like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kentanji Brown, Elena Kagan, Sandra Day O'Connor, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Patricia Guerrero, Kelli Evans, Leondra Kruger, Carol Corrigan, and others have proven women belong and bring indispensable value to decision-making spaces.
