On July 5th-11th, Troop 259 went to summer camp! Although Troop 259 usually goes to Camp Marin Sierra during the summer, this year we tried out a new summer camp, Camp Hi-Sierra. Unlike most other Scouting activities, summer camp lasts a whole entire week. But, our food is cooked for us, and our tents are already set up when we get there.
At Camp Hi-Sierra, you sign up for the merit badge/rank advancement classes you want, and do them throughout the day, during specific blocks of time. There’s flag raising/lowering you attend with your whole entire troop in the morning and evening. Also, on the day you arrive and the day before you leave, there’s the campfire, where you get to watch skits and songs, and maybe even put on your own. And, of course, there’s meal time, where your troop and all the other troops in camp gather in the dining hall to eat. If you have any free blocks of time during the afternoon, you could participate in an activity, like gold-panning, or do a drop-in merit badge, like Fingerprinting!
This particular summer camp was very unique, as it offered merit badges that others didn’t, like Archaeology, Climbing, and even Metalworking. Our Scouts had a fun time at this summer camp. Each scout who went got at least 4 merit badges, while some got even more! The food is absolutely amazing here, but it would be nice if the water in the aquatics area was, to put it plainly, a little less brisk and a little more refreshing. But, of course, T259 would definitely come back to this summer camp.
