Scouts BSA Troop 259 serves the Greenhaven/Pocket/Land Park area of Sacramento California and is part of the Greater California Council's Three Rivers District.

On the 18-20 of September, Troop 259 camped at Chaw’se State Park, also known as Indian Grinding Rock. And for once, it didn’t rain! While camping, we also checked out the nearby Black Chasm Caverns National Natural Landmark, which is known for its gravity defying helictites, which are rock formations in the cave that jut straight out of the sides of the cave walls. Also in the cave are a species of arachnid only found there, called “Banksula Grubbsi”. Sadly, they are very scared of humans, so they only live deep down in the cave, which is why I couldn't get a picture of one. Other than that, a small group of scouts went on a service project/hike, where they cleaned up a nature trail. We had a blast at this campout, and we would, and will, come back next year.

From August 14th-16th of 2026, Troop 259 went camping at Lake Oroville! What’s particularly special about this trip is that it was a family camp, meaning whole entire families could come, which did happen. For the younger kids, this camp was a good preview of what being a Scout is like in our troop, and it shows them just how many adventures are in store for them when they are old enough to join! Since Lake Oroville is, well, a lake, the troop brought water related gear. We had innertubes, floaties, and even kayaks. We also went on a hike there, and saw lots of wildlife. There were even bald eagles! Overall, the troop had a good time splashing around in the sun, and we would love to camp here again.

On July 5th-11th, Troop 259 went to summer camp! Although Troop 259 usually goes to Camp Marin Sierra during the summer, this year we tried out a new summer camp, Camp Hi-Sierra. Unlike most other Scouting activities, summer camp lasts a whole entire week. But, our food is cooked for us, and our tents are already set up when we get there.

At Camp Hi-Sierra, you sign up for the merit badge/rank advancement classes you want, and do them throughout the day, during specific blocks of time. There’s flag raising/lowering you attend with your whole entire troop in the morning and evening. Also, on the day you arrive and the day before you leave, there’s the campfire, where you get to watch skits and songs, and maybe even put on your own. And, of course, there’s meal time, where your troop and all the other troops in camp gather in the dining hall to eat. If you have any free blocks of time during the afternoon, you could participate in an activity, like gold-panning, or do a drop-in merit badge, like Fingerprinting!

This particular summer camp was very unique, as it offered merit badges that others didn’t, like Archaeology, Climbing, and even Metalworking. Our Scouts had a fun time at this summer camp. Each scout who went got at least 4 merit badges, while some got even more! The food is absolutely amazing here, but it would be nice if the water in the aquatics area was, to put it plainly, a little less brisk and a little more refreshing. But, of course, T259 would definitely come back to this summer camp.

Do you know what's better than a regular-old camping trip? That’s right, it’s backpacking! On the 19th-21st of June, Troop 259 went on a backpacking trip from Silver Lake to Upper Granite Lake, gaining about 500 feet in the process, and then back down again. It was a beginner backpacking trip, so it was only about 3 miles roundtrip, but it was still fun. Once we got up to Upper Granite Lake, we of course ate backpacking food, built a fort, and even had an encounter with some of the wildlife (snakes… yikes!). Overall, we had a fun time on this backpacking trip, but some of us in particular need to remember to pack lightly, and apply sunscreen! (I'm referring to myself, of course).

For Troop 259, Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun in the sun, and with this campout, we did exactly that. On May 29-31 of 2026, Troop 259 had a campout at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Here’s one fun fact about the park: The tallest redwood in the park is 277 feet high, and about 1,500 years old! While staying there, the troop also visited the Mystery Spot and the Santa Cruz Beachboard Walk. At the beach boardwalk, our troop had a fun time on all the rides, but they especially liked the Sea Serpent. According to a member of our troop, the best time they had on this trip was at the Mystery Spot, because “nothing made sense, but that made it even better!” Overall, the campout was one of the funnest ones we’ve had lately, and we would definitely want to do this again next summer.

Our 2026 Spring Court of Honor was an opportunity to review accomplishments during the past six months. We also announced our newly-elected Scout Leadership positions, including Senior Patrol Leader Tyler S.

Merit Badges and Rank Advancement patches were presented. We were pleased to celebrate Troop 259’s newest Eagle Scout, Cody Yin. Cody is our 191st Eagle!

Troop 259 went camping at Sly Park, near Po***ck Pines on March 13-15. Fun fact about Sly Park: There’s an area within it called “Scout Hill” which, for decades, has been a famous campground for Scouts and Girl Scouts. And it's still used today! (Although our troop didn't camp there.) Our troop went hiking, fishing, and got lots of things signed off during our stay. Overall, we had an amazing time, and we can’t wait till we get to camp there again.

On the 13th-14th of February, 2026, Troop 259 went on a campout at Westgate Landing. Although we had to leave early because of a storm rolling in, we still had a fun time. We fished, hunted for rocks, got requirements signed off, and some scouts even earned their Totin’ Chip and Firem’n Chit! We did encounter some problems with the water, as it wasn’t safe to drink, but our crafty Scouts overcame that. All you had to do was boil the water, and let it cool down again. Overall our campout was fun, and we avoided the rain successfully.
