Buona Festa della Repubblica!
Republic Day on June 2 is a national and public holiday in Italy celebrated with parades, fireworks, concerts and picnics, much like Independence Day in the United States! On June 2, 1946, Italians were asked to choose the type of government they wanted for the country. Voters were given the choice between a monarchy or a republic. The voters chose to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic by a vote of 54.3% to 45.7%. The date of June 2 was chosen to commemorate the birth of the Italian Republic and the first celebration occured on June 2, 1947. Another important aspect of this referendum was that it was the first time in Italian history that women were allowed to vote!
