Every bridge is supported by strong pillars. This new series celebrates the physicians whose service, compassion and leadership help connect medicine and our community.

Our first Pillar is David P***a, MD!

After more than 25 years in gastroenterology, Dr. P***a says one lesson stands above all the technology and medical advances he's witnessed: medicine is an art.

Whether helping a patient through frightening news, earning the trust of someone whose symptoms stem from past trauma, or simply taking the time to truly listen, he believes the way we care for people matters just as much as the science behind the diagnosis.

As a volunteer physician with SPIRIT, Dr. P***a quietly gives back to patients who might otherwise have nowhere to turn for specialty care. To him, they aren't "volunteer patients"—they're simply people who deserve excellent care.

Thank you, Dr. P***a, for reminding us that compassion isn't an extra part of medicine—it's at the heart of it.

Volunteer physicians needed! Your expertise can change a life.

Through SPIRIT, specialty physicians provide donated care to uninsured patients in our community who otherwise wouldn't have access to the specialty services they need.

Whether you volunteer in your practice or at a partner hospital or surgery center, SPIRIT makes it easy by coordinating referrals and scheduling while also providing case management. You can focus on what you do best: caring for patients.

Everyone should learn how to save lives!

Today, our Future of Medicine students gained hands-on experience with a stop-the-bleed lab, learned how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose through naloxone (Narcan) training, and explored the history of healthcare during a tour of the Museum of Medical History.

A special thank you to Kubo Vue and Courtney Ma of FACES for the Future Coalition; Nicole, Jonathan, Jennifer, and Kellie with UC Davis Health; Joanna Roberto of the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition for leading the naloxone training; and to Irina Korman, MD and Susan Hooten, MD of the Museum of Medical History for helping students connect with the rich history of medicine in our region.

Every experience brings these future healthcare professionals one step closer to making a difference.

Every experience helps inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals!

Today, our Future of Medicine students went behind the scenes at Vitalant - California, where they toured the blood laboratories, built blood samples, explored careers in laboratory medicine, played the Revival card game, and tested their knowledge with blood banking trivia.

They also learned the importance of effective patient communication during an engaging session led by the Capitol City Black Nurses Association.

A heartfelt thank you to Vitalant, Jonathan Hughes, MD, Lucy Laird, the Capital City Black Nurses Association, Aron King, and John Davis for sharing your expertise and helping students discover the many paths to a career in healthcare.

What a month! June was filled with opportunities to educate, connect, and serve our community.

Here's a look at what we've been up to:
Welcomed our latest Future of Medicine students for an incredible week of hands-on learning! Students earned CPR certification, toured an ambulance with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, visited the Vitalant - California Blood Lab, practiced casting and splinting, learned suturing techniques, and explored sheep hearts and other organs while discovering what a career in medicine can look like.

Hosted another wonderful Second Saturday at the Museum of Medical History and installed a new exhibit highlighting the rich history and contributions of African medicine.

Joined community partners at the Unity Care Rise & Thrive Summit, where the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition shared resources and connected with attendees to support healthier, safer communities.

Thank you to our physician volunteers, community partners, and everyone who helps make this work possible. We're excited for all that's ahead this summer!
