HIV is now highly-preventable and very treatable. Through proper care, progression to AIDs can be prevented and risk of transmission to partners can be ZERO. HIV/AIDs Awareness Day recognizes that those living with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

This didn’t happen overnight, or without a fight. Advocates, many belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community, fought incredibly hard through deep stigma, bias, and discrimination so that all of us can have access to care.

The work is not over. Stigma remains a large barrier to prevention and treatment. We must work together as physicians, community members, advocates, and neighbors for a healthier world.

Dr. Jackobsen has volunteered with SPIRIT for nearly two decades, providing surgical care to patients who otherwise may not have access to it. For her, the reward is seeing patients return to their lives feeling better, thriving and, as she puts it, “whole again.”
