As one of 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 1 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗵 is grateful for Golden 1’s 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲.

Fitrah was 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 at the gathering, and I was honored to present our work alongside our board member, 𝗘𝗷𝗶𝗿𝗼 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗿𝗼. It was inspiring to hear from the other presenters—𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 , 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 , 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙3 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲!—and learn about their work in 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

The 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. With thoughtful questions guiding six short rounds of conversation, we had a chance to 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 and meet Golden 1 team members serving the 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Those conversations can be the start of 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀.

It was inspiring to hear from the other presenters—𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙3 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 !—and learn about their work in 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. I also appreciated learning about 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 1’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 and touring the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲.

Thank you to 𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿, 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 1 and the 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 1 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 for supporting Fitrah and creating space for grantees to 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 and explore ways to 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. Sometimes, it’s someone who has spent years 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.

As Fitrah celebrates 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, we’re continuing to introduce you to the people who have chosen to 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 and help build what comes next.

This week, we’re highlighting 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗴𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘆 and the perspective she brings to Fitrah.

Margaret’s work has always centered around 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲. After volunteering with 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 2018, she now serves as its 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, helping bring volunteers and community partners together to make a lasting difference.

That experience has shaped the way Margaret sees the 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. Whether she’s bringing a team together or helping a community move forward, she believes in 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽.

That’s part of what drew her to 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗵.

For Margaret, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀 means helping create the kind of support that allows 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.

As Fitrah enters its 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿, Margaret is one of the people helping us 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵.

Because sometimes, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. 💙

We loved sharing how young people build a path toward their future through career exposure, hands-on training, paid work experience, and connections to next steps.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁.

Last week, we began this series by introducing Ejiro Okoro and hearing about the people who opened doors for her and shaped her belief in 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Now, we’re excited to introduce 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗻, 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗵’𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿.

With 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 17 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, Badar brings valuable expertise to Fitrah. He believes in the importance of 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

When Badar was young, he hoped to become a scientist. His path took him in a different direction, and his experience showed him 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 as young people explore what they want to do. It’s one of the reasons he chose to serve Fitrah and support its mission.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂. Badar uses his experience to help Fitrah build a strong foundation so young people have the support and opportunities to 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀.

Outside of work, Badar enjoys fishing with family and has recently discovered a new interest in gardening. 🌱

As Fitrah celebrates seven years, we want you to meet some of the people who have chosen to stand behind our young people—and help build what comes next.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝗷𝗶𝗿𝗼 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗿𝗼, 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗵’𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀.

Ejiro is an attorney and serves as Senior Counsel, Public Policy & Advocacy at United Way California Capital Region, where her work focuses on public policies that advance education, community health, and financial empowerment. She was also recognized as one of the Sacramento Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 leaders in 2025.

But what brought Ejiro to Fitrah is something much more personal: a belief in investing in the leaders of tomorrow.

She believes young people deserve opportunities to recognize the brilliance they already carry within them—and people willing to help them turn that potential into possibility.

That’s why serving on Fitrah’s board isn’t simply about overseeing an organization. For Ejiro, it’s about helping build something that lasts.

As Fitrah enters its next chapter—expanding hands-on workforce development, career exploration, and pathways to meaningful work—Ejiro is one of the people helping us build it.

And soon, you’ll see just how strongly our Board believes in what comes next.

We began with books—creating access to 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴. But as we listened to young people, we learned that opening doors also meant helping them 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.

Today, Fitrah provides 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Our work has evolved, but our belief has never changed: 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻.
