Thursday we completed 3 months of turtle nest surveys at Bushy Lake near Cal Expo. There have been a lot of changes at the site! We have a new Beaver series of dams on the west side of bushey Lake, they're at least four s**t pile locations for river otters, which we saw Thursday, a bobcat is taking up the territory and student assistance found for predated fawns, and we're seeing really different distribution patterns of turtles. W

We trapped turtles only once. A new NW pond turtle male, app 6 years old. 8 red eared slider.

When we went out early in the morning, could see Little critter tracks in the dust that have been there before us. Beaver, River otters, small mammals and turkeys.

We are really seeing a habitat Island with high biodiversity at bushey Lake, some of the best in the lower American River parkway. Because we have no neighbors, we have very little public support, and it's hard to go alone. Lake organization. If anybody would like to be part of us. We are working with the Indigenous Futures Society to apply for a grant from CA WCB. We would greatly appreciate letters of support.

We have been conducting weekly turtle nest surveys, which we have done since 2021. There are a lot of changes on ste. If any biologists reading this have thoughts I would appreciate hearing! We are seeing about half the number of turtle nests from previous years. We identify nests through predation exposing egg fragments and plugs.

Changes to the site include the following; 1. New Beaver dams and impoundment on west side of the site. 2. Presence of bobcat in territory, 3 fawns killed by bobcat. 3. More flooding on south side of site! 4. More scary wonder if beaver or otter.

Turtle nest surveys at Bushy Lake. Red-Eared slider nest recently dug up by the predator, still had one egg in it. She must have just laid the eggs. We aren't seeing as many nests as we usually do, and because of the rate of predation in our experience out at Bushy Lake we have a pretty good baseline of what we should be seeing. Seeing. I wonder if it's because of the late spring rains being still pretty wet for nesting? Also, we were really surprised to see a new Beaver dam on the west side of the lake!
