The BUG (Biodiversity in Urban Gardens) statewide community science study is off to a SPECTACULAR start!

In the first weeks of this study, we've already seen thousands of observations covering hundreds of species submitted to the corresponding iNaturalist projects. A HUGE shoutout to iNaturalist user hogpotato, who is leading the charge. This data will be used to advocate for native plants in the built environment in California. To get involved, head to cnps.org/BUG.

And before you can ask, YES, the last image counts as two observations!

The BUG project is made possible with generous project support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Special thanks also to the Mary A. Crocker Trust and the CNPS Santa Clara Valley Chapter for their generous support of BUG in Santa Clara and southern San Mateo counties.

We're hiring! 🌿

CNPS is looking for a Horticulture Senior Coordinator to join our Education & Horticulture team and support our Landscapes for Change campaign, which has the goal of transforming the built environment in California with native plants.

In this role, you'll help make native plant resources more accessible across California—maintaining horticultural standards, managing tools like Calscape, and collaborating with chapters, partners, and industry professionals. This role is ideal for someone with 4–6 years of experience who loves translating technical knowledge into practical impact.

Hybrid (Sacramento preferred)
Apply by July 5 at https://bit.ly/HorticultureSeniorCoordinator!

California's cities and towns are teeming with life—native bees pollinating backyard flowers, lizards sunning on garden walls, and birds nesting in neighborhood trees. Biodiversity isn't just out there in the wilderness, it's right outside your door! 🐝🦎🐦‍⬛

We're thrilled to announce the launch of the BUG (Biodiversity in Urban Gardens) Initiative, a statewide study of native plants and the native wildlife they support, made possible with generous project support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Here's how it works:
1. Join the two Biodiversity in Urban Gardens projects on iNaturalist
2. Find native plants near you and look for native insects, birds, lizards, and other wildlife in, on, or around the native plants.
3. Snap a photo and upload it to the corresponding iNaturalist project. That's it! Your observations become real data that help scientists better understand biodiversity across California.

No experience needed—just curiosity, a smartphone or digital camera, and the iNaturalist app. Learn more and sign up at https://bit.ly/4uysmU1 and start exploring!

Special thanks also to the Mary A. Crocker Trust and the CNPS Santa Clara Valley Chapter for their generous support of BUG in Santa Clara and southern San Mateo counties.

Introducing the BUG Initiative: Biodiversity in Urban Gardens. 🌿 🐝

94% of Californians live in cities, and more than 30% of the state’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. That means the way we use our backyards, parkways, and even highways factor into California's biodiversity crisis. We need *your* help to better understand and foster the diversity of life that surrounds us.

BUG is a new two-year CNPS initiative that connects three things:
1. Community Science: Document native plants & wildlife in your neighborhood via iNaturalist. No experience needed, just a smart phone or digital camera!
2. Advocacy: Learn how your observations and personal experiences can connect to real civic action for urban biodiversity.
3. Public policy: Be part of shaping policy statewide and locally for urban biodiversity.

You can be part of a beautiful change for California!

Read the full announcement at https://bit.ly/4uxPDp9 and stay tuned in the coming days to get involved. 🐛🦋🌻

When a proposed solar project threatened one of California's most vital oak habitats, people showed up: scientists, lawyers, tribal advocates, everyday community members, and creators who used their platforms to make sure the rest of us were paying attention.

We're especially grateful for Jessie Dickson () and Gabrielle Katanic (), two voices who brought this fight to thousands of people who might never have heard about it otherwise. Their love for California's native landscapes is exactly the kind of force that moves the needle.

The fight isn't over, but because of people like Jessie and Gabrielle, a lot more of us are paying attention. Read the full story in our Spring 2026 issue of Flora: https://bit.ly/4v82fU3
