MEMORIAL CEREMONY: Every May preceding National Police Week, the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation (CPOMF) sponsors a two-day memorial service honoring California’s fallen heroes. Officer Ronald E. Davis was attempting to pass two vehicles as he was responding to an accident call on U.S. Highway 91 east of Barstow. One of the drivers, apparently unaware of the siren or red light, pulled out in front of the patrol car. Davis turned to avoid a collision but went into a broadside skid, rolling the patrol car several times. A passing motorist found the 28-year-old patrolman still strapped in his seat, but he had died instantly. Barstow was Officer Davis’ first assignment since graduating from the Academy less than a year earlier.

For nearly 50 years, the California Peace Officers’ Memorial monument has stood as a sacred place of remembrance, honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty. This hallowed ground represents sacrifice, service, and the lasting bond between law enforcement, the judicial system, and the communities they protect.

As CPOMF approaches the 50th anniversary of honoring California’s fallen peace officers in 2028, we are proud to launch the Monument Expansion Project. This meaningful initiative will ensure that the names of over 1,680 fallen officers are forever etched in stone, provide new spaces for reflection for surviving families, and create room to honor generations of heroes still to come.

This project is about more than expanding a monument. It is about preserving memory, honoring sacrifice, supporting families, and creating a lasting legacy for future generations. Currently, the California Peace Officers' Memorial Monument honors 137 officers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty while serving all Californians in the month of August.

Law enforcement officers from different agencies throughout California are included in this list. These individuals are more than just names; they are beloved family members – sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, spouses, parents, friends, partners, and much more. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Sunday, July 10, 2011, Alhambra PD Officers Ryan Stringer and Juan Mejia were responding to an emergency call of an armed robbery in progress when their patrol vehicles collided near the intersection of E. Main Street and N. Garfield Avenue. Both officers were transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where Officer Stringer died of his injuries.

Officer Stringer, age 26, joined the Alhambra Police Department in January 2009. He is survived by his mother and father and four sisters.

💙 JULY REMEMBRANCE 💙

As of today, 134 names are etched into the California Peace Officers' Memorial Monument of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of California during the month of July.

These names represent law enforcement professionals from agencies across the state. But they are far more than names on a monument. They were sons and daughters, siblings, spouses, parents, friends, and partners. They were California Peace Officers.

Let us honor their legacy, remember their sacrifice, and ensure their names are never forgotten. 🕊💙

Officer Edward A. Frey was pursuing a speeding vehicle when another vehicle in front of him slowed to make a left turn. Frey was unable to stop, and his motorcycle struck the vehicle ahead before glancing off into the path of an oncoming car. The 38-year-old patrol officer sustained critical internal injuries and died 10 days later.

Officer Frey will never be forgotten. 💙🕊

After completing his assignment for the evening at the Sheriff’s Medical Detention Facility, Deputy Stewart Baird, 44, proceeded to the place of business where his wife was working to assist her with closing the business.

As they worked, a man entered the business armed with a sawed off rifle. At gunpoint, he ordered the cash register emptied. The suspect demanded Baird and other patrons remain seated with their heads down.

Deputy Baird confronted the suspect as he attempted to leave the business. During a physical altercation that followed, Deputy Baird drew his service weapon and fired two shots as the robber accosted him. One of the bullets hit the suspect but it failed to stop his attack on Baird. The suspect viciously hit Deputy Baird in the head causing him to fall and strike his head again. Deputy Baird died within minutes.

The suspect fled the business and collapsed outside on the sidewalk and died of his wounds. The suspect was identified as a parolee with a long and violent criminal history including a previous arrest for murder.

Deputy Stewart Baird was awarded the Medal of Valor, posthumously, for bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

Deputy Baird is buried at Mount Vernon Memorial Park on Greenback Lane in Sacramento, California.

Deputy Baird will never be forgotten. 💙🕊

The California Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation annual scholarships are now available to apply. 💛

The CPOMF Scholarship Program has been established to assist survivors of California peace officers killed in the line of duty who are enrolled at the California Peace Officers' Memorial Monument in Sacramento by offering a scholarship program to help them reach their educational goals. This program is open to our Honored Officers' children, stepchildren, adopted children, and spouses. If you know someone qualified to receive this scholarship, please help us spread the word by sending them this post.

The application period closes on September 1st, 2026.
