After completing his assignment for the evening at the Sheriff’s Medical Detention Facility, Deputy Stewart Baird, 44, proceeded to the place of business where his wife was working to assist her with closing the business.

As they worked, a man entered the business armed with a sawed off rifle. At gunpoint, he ordered the cash register emptied. The suspect demanded Baird and other patrons remain seated with their heads down.

Deputy Baird confronted the suspect as he attempted to leave the business. During a physical altercation that followed, Deputy Baird drew his service weapon and fired two shots as the robber accosted him. One of the bullets hit the suspect but it failed to stop his attack on Baird. The suspect viciously hit Deputy Baird in the head causing him to fall and strike his head again. Deputy Baird died within minutes.

The suspect fled the business and collapsed outside on the sidewalk and died of his wounds. The suspect was identified as a parolee with a long and violent criminal history including a previous arrest for murder.

Deputy Stewart Baird was awarded the Medal of Valor, posthumously, for bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

Deputy Baird is buried at Mount Vernon Memorial Park on Greenback Lane in Sacramento, California.

Deputy Baird will never be forgotten. 💙🕊

JUNE REMEMBRANCE 💙

This June, we honor the 124 California Peace Officers whose names are etched on the California Peace Officers' Memorial Monument, each one a hero who gave their life in the line of duty while serving and protecting the people of California. They were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, spouses, parents, friends, and partners. They were deeply loved and will never be forgotten. Sergeant Rios of the Merced Police Department supports the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Expansion Project:

“The memorial is important because this is not just a place, it’s an emotion, it’s a memory to remember that we are not supposed to forget about our fallen officers. It’s a place to allow families, future officers, and past officers to remember the legacies that we do not want to forget about, and that they did not die in vain.”

The Memorial Expansion Project ensures every fallen officer, past, present, and future, is honored with the space and dignity they deserve. 💙🕊️

Today, May 15th, is National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day 💙

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15th a day to honor the brave peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The week surrounding this date is known as National Police Week — a time to remember and pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. 💙🕊️

Let us never forget their courage, commitment, and sacrifice. 💙🕊

Together, we remembered. Together, we honored. 💙🕊️

Yesterday and today, we gathered for the Candlelight Vigil and Enrollment Ceremony to pay tribute to the 13 California peace officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Surrounded by their families, friends, and agencies from across the state, we stood united in reflection, remembrance, and unwavering support.

To the families who stood with us and entrusted us with honoring your loved ones, to the agencies who continue to show up year after year, and to all who attended, supported, and helped make these ceremonies possible—thank you. Your presence ensures that their legacies live on and that they are never forgotten.

We carry their names. We honor their sacrifice. 💙

This morning’s Logistics Briefing brought together representatives from agencies across the state of California, each one here with a shared purpose. 💙

Together, they come to assist in the California Peace Officers’ Memorial ceremonies, working behind the scenes to ensure every detail is carried out with the care, respect, and dignity our fallen heroes deserve.💙

Though they come from different departments and communities, everyone in this room stands united in the same mission: to honor the 13 California Peace Officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to support the families they left behind.💙

A special thank you to CAHP Credit Union for sponsoring this morning’s Logistics Briefing and supporting the work that makes these ceremonies possible.💙

It is through this collective commitment that we are able to properly remember, honor, and never forget. 💙🕊️
