This year, the Governor signed AB 1108 (Hart) and AB 715 (Zbur) despite concerns raised by the FIERCE Coalition and partners statewide.

Our coalition opposed AB 1108 alongside families impacted by police violence, including the family of Angelo Quinto. Although there were impactful amendments made, the bill maintains the outdated Sheriff-Coroner model and leaves gaps in transparency and accountability.

FIERCE also opposed AB 715, a bill that expands the definition of discrimination in a way that attacks the integrity of Ethnic Studies and limits free speech in classrooms all over California.

While not all of our advocacy positions prevailed, we will continue to fight for policies that protect and uplift FilAm communities.

This year, the FIERCE Coalition took positions on 13 bills in the California Legislature and fought for policies to protect our community. Our legislative platform spanned from workers rights and housing, to protecting Ethnic Studies and immigrant rights.

Some key victories include the signing of AB 49 (Muratsuchi), SB 578 (Smallwood-Cuevas), and AB 863 (Kalra).

The FIERCE Coalition took formal positions on these bills because of their impact on our diverse FilAm communities, particularly families, youth, students, and community members struggling with rising costs and ongoing barriers to opportunity.

We will continue to support the bills that strengthen our communities. Please stay tuned for our 2026 FIERCE Advocacy Day and other opportunities to make your voice heard.

Join our statewide Prop 50 Briefing call this Thursday, Sep 4th at 5PM [PT] via Zoom. Provide feedback, ask questions and get involved.

On Nov 4th, California voters will decide upon Prop 50, which is to approve or reject temporarily redrawn congressional maps. Unlike other states, Californians will have the opportunity to vote on mid-cycle redistricting to counteract the extreme, partisan and undemocratic gerrymandering happening across the country.

With mail-in ballots being sent out in a little over a month, our efforts to educate and engage Filipino voters in the upcoming special election is imperative!

On Philippine Independence Day, we honor our ancestors’ fight for liberation by standing with immigrant communities facing state violence today.

From colonization to criminalization, our people have always resisted. We condemn the ICE raids in LA and across the country, and we demand an end to the war on immigrants.

We were honored to be joined by special guests California State Senator Christopher Cabaldon and Deputy Chancellor for the California Community College System Dr. Rowena Tomaneng at our Tagumpay Reception.

Senator Cabaldon made history last fall when he became the first Filipino American elected to the California State Senate. However, prior to that, he served for two decades as the Mayor of West Sacramento.

A mentor to many and advocate for Filipina/x/o Americans, LGBTQ+ community members, working families, workers and immigrants and broader communities pushed to the margins, we celebrated Senator Cabaldon’s leadership and thanked him for his partnership through the years.
