Visiting Camp Smokey at the California State Fair is fun for all ages. Yesterday, long time volunteer Pat Stanley made a new friend when he assisted her in repairing her puppet Iris. Camp Smokey is more than just an exhibit about fire safety. It is about connecting with our community and educating all that attend. .s.forestservice

CAL FIRE’s Jesse Torres and Eddie Aguilar took a break from Camp Smokey for a bit to help judge the HERO Act Chili Cookoff at Save Mart California’s Kitchen in Building B at the fair.
Jesse and Eddie tasted five tasty chili entries from fire stations across Sacramento. The winner of the cookoff wins a Golden Bear trophy! Don’t worry, they brought a cup of chili back for Smokey too.

Camp Smokey was honored to host the recognition ceremony for this year’s national grand prize winner of the 2025 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest last week!

Adaleen Cho, a second grader from the Sacramento area is the first national grand prize winner to come from California. Her poster features kids planting trees while Woodsy Owl hikes on a trail with the conservation message ‘Lend a Hand, Care for the Land.’ Adaleen's artwork captured the essence of Woodsy Owl as a symbol of guardianship over our forests and served as a reminder to protect and cherish our natural world.

Adaleen and her family were greeted by Acting Regional Forester for Region 5 of the USDA Forest Service Jason Kuiken, as well as Acting Deputy Regional Foresters Ted McArthur and Jim Bacon, Sparky the Fire Dog, Captain Cal, and Smokey Bear himself! Adaleen also received a trophy, a certificate, and a framed print of her poster.

An annual event since 1961, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs, Inc., worked together to develop an annual poster contest to reach and engage elementary school children throughout the country to promote fire prevention and conservation and emphasize everyone’s role and responsibility in caring for the environment. Nearly 6,000 posters were entered in this year’s contest.

Congratulations, Adaleen!
