Shop Class Needs Your Help

I am writing to you today under the most dire of circumstances. We are currently experiencing a major budget shortfall due to a generous donor backing out of their pledged donation at the last minute. As it stands, we lack the funds to pay for rent and utilities this month.

Makerspaces and similar businesses all have trouble around the holidays: a combination of grants being largely unavailable until January and lack of new memberships usually causes some issues with cash flow. We are eligible to apply for more than $200K of grants in just January and February alone. However, this comes as cold comfort knowing that our landlord will give us a 3 day notice if we cannot make our rent this month and next.

My plea to all of you is, if you are able, please donate, sign up for a membership, or a class. Nobody wants to see this forced to close before we ever had a chance to truly get started. While we continue to search for other avenues for emergency funding, it is up to you to help us get Shop Class over this hill.

Shop class is looking for volunteers to take part in Sacramento's newest nonprofit Makerspace. We are currently in need of people willing to volunteer at our front desk.

Front Desk Volunteers are expected to be stationed at the front desk during their shift (bathroom breaks are okay). Sit or stand, your choice, and we will make any reasonable accommodations upon request.

Requirements:

- Proficient in English
- At least 15 years old
- Able to commit to a single 2-3 hour block one day per week

Responsibilities:

- Prompt guests to sign in on the tablet
- Help guests sign up for membership
- Print name badges / member cards

There are no expectations of being "on call" nor having to remove people as leadership will be close by to handle those situations.

Any Shop Class volunteer who is able to commit 3 hours or more per week (or 12 hours per month) will receive free membership to Shop Class. Additionally, volunteers may help themselves to the drinks refrigerator and snack bar.
