Victory: A California trial court once again ruled for the animals! On May 27, 2026, the Humboldt County Superior Court denied the Alexandres’ motion to quash LIC’s subpoenas in LIC v. Alexandre.

The court’s ruling reiterated that California “statutes authorize an SPCA such as Legal Impact for Chickens . . . to ‘proffer’ a complaint for violations of state and local laws enacted for the protection of animals.”

“[T]he Court finds that the necessity for disclosure in light of the allegations of the complaint outweighs any confidentiality interests the agencies may have, in the interests of justice. The requested records, if they exist, relate directly to the allegations that Defendants violated California’s animal cruelty laws by underfeeding cattle, denying veterinary care, and selling abused cattle at auction.”

You may have heard the statistic that over 500,000 U.S. birds per year are boiled alive in scald tanks after being improperly slaughtered. This statistic stemmed from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

LIC now demands USDA renew collecting this information, so these birds' deaths will at least continue to be counted.

BREAKING: Legal Impact for Chickens is suing California’s largest poultry producer for cruelty.

Our complaint accuses Foster Farms of crushing chickens with forklifts, forcing birds to live among the maggot-covered corpses of their dead flockmates, and kicking and throwing animals.

LIC’s animal cruelty lawsuit comes on the heels of a damning undercover investigation which LIC commissioned the talented Animal Outlook to conduct.

Legal Impact for Chickens brought suit against California’s largest poultry producer for cruelty. LIC's complaint accuses Foster Farms of crushing chickens with forklifts, forcing birds to live among the maggot-covered corpses of their dead flockmates, and kicking and throwing animals.

URGENT: Call your Senators NOW! 🇺🇸 Please ask them to publicly oppose any Farm Bill that contains the cruel "Save our Bacon Act."

The SOB Act would force mother pigs back into gestation crates, force feeding tubes BACK down ducks' throats, and more. It'd UNDO compassionate state laws across the country to protect animals, like California's Prop 12 and foie gras ban. 🐷 🦆 ‼️

Tip: Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask for your senators.

Say, “My name is_______, and I live in _________, __. I’m calling to urge the Senator to OPPOSE any farm bill that contains the cruel 'Save Our Bacon Act.' The SOB Act would FORCE animals back into cages, and undo compassionate state animal-welfare laws across the country.”

Attorney Alene Anello ’10, J.D. ’16, grew up with a cockatiel named Conrad who perched on her shoulder while she cleaned the house and watched TV. Now she tends a trio of parakeets who fly free in her Oakland, California, bedroom.

In 2021, with help from a seed grant from the Harvard Law School Public Service Venture Fund, she founded the nonprofit Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC).

The six-person organization, based in Sacramento, California, focuses on the plight of factory-farmed chickens, known as “broilers.” More than nine billion of them are killed annually in the United States, where chicken is the most popular meat to consume.
