Legal Impact for Chickens Cruelty = liability

“A reasonable person would not knowingly commit a criminal act and as such, the illegality of a product constitutes a material representation to a reasonable customer.” - Carey v. JAK’s Puppies, 21-cv-02095 (CD Cal Aug. 4, 2026)

This new federal puppylaundering ruling shows consumers want to buy things that COMPLY with pro-animal laws.

Thus, when a family brings home a puppy in California, the family expects the dog to be RESCUED, as CA law requires (NOT from a puppy mill).

*ACTION ALERT* The FAA is considering whether food and agriculture facilities should be able to restrict drone flights over their property. This could shield factory farms and slaughterhouses from one of the few ways to document the mistreatment of animals. Act now: bit.ly/faa-comment

The managing attorney for the organization says the company’s actions after 2024 investigation were not enough, and California’s Corporations Code gives it grounds to seek further discipline.

Victory: A California trial court once again ruled for the animals! On May 27, 2026, the Humboldt County Superior Court denied the Alexandres’ motion to quash LIC’s subpoenas in LIC v. Alexandre.

The court’s ruling reiterated that California “statutes authorize an SPCA such as Legal Impact for Chickens . . . to ‘proffer’ a complaint for violations of state and local laws enacted for the protection of animals.”

“[T]he Court finds that the necessity for disclosure in light of the allegations of the complaint outweighs any confidentiality interests the agencies may have, in the interests of justice. The requested records, if they exist, relate directly to the allegations that Defendants violated California’s animal cruelty laws by underfeeding cattle, denying veterinary care, and selling abused cattle at auction.”

You may have heard the statistic that over 500,000 U.S. birds per year are boiled alive in scald tanks after being improperly slaughtered. This statistic stemmed from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

LIC now demands USDA renew collecting this information, so these birds' deaths will at least continue to be counted.
