Dialogue Earth consulted Juan Pablo Osornio, engagement and policy director at Earth Insight, on the topic of Fossil Fuel Free Zones as a path to a cleaner future.

These territorial extraction bans are a useful tool in oil and gas phaseouts, if they can survive political swings and compromised economies

At the The Earthshot Prize Impact Assembly during London Climate Action Week, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $260 million commitment to expand the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative, marking a new phase of global ocean conservation focused on implementation, transparency, and establishing protections across the high seas. The investment will help close the gap between ocean protection commitments and action as countries work toward the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.

Earth Insight is proud to be part of a global network of partners supported by Bloomberg and working across science, policy, technology, conservation, and community leadership.

Tyson Miller, Executive Director of Earth Insight, said: “Our work is centered on creating the tools leaders need to form lasting conservation policy. Hand in hand with this investment by Bloomberg Philanthropies, we can ensure that coastal communities, policy-makers, and global stakeholders have the latest science and messaging at their disposal to protect these key ecosystems.”

A new Earth Insight report finds that offshore oil, gas, and LNG expansion threatens marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods across 11 countries.

🐠 38% of coral reefs in the study areas fall within oil and gas risk zones
🌿 29% of mangroves are directly overlapped by oil and gas blocks
🐋 50% of Important Marine Mammal Areas overlap with oil and gas blocks
🎣 Communities that depend on fishing, tourism, and healthy oceans face growing risks
Ask yourself:
❓What happens if the reefs that support fisheries disappear?
❓How do coastal communities recover from oil spills and industrial expansion?
❓Can we truly protect our oceans while expanding offshore fossil fuels?
The future of marine life and coastal livelihoods depends on the choices we make now.

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline, known as EACOP, is entering its final stages across some of East Africa’s most vital freshwater systems. Stretching 1,443 kilometers from Uganda to Tanzania, the pipeline cuts through protected areas, critical wetlands, wildlife habitats, and river systems that sustain millions of people and support regional economies tied to fisheries, tourism, farming, and ecosystem services.

New analysis reveals growing risks to freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity, community livelihoods, and regional water security as construction advances. The project also intersects ancient migration corridors and habitats for endangered wildlife across East Africa, raising concerns over irreversible environmental and social impacts as the pipeline nears completion.

On May 6, we're hosting a conversation that can't wait.

"Indigenous Peoples Solutions to Territorial Threats" brings together Indigenous leaders from the Yavarí-Tapiche Corridor, in the border region between Peru and Brazil, to discuss the existential threats to one of the world's most biodiverse territories, and the solutions communities on the ground are already leading.

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear grounded, community-led solutions by leaders from Aidesep Pueblos Indígenas, Orpio, Coiab Amazonia, COICA ORG, and Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC)

🔸 Fany Kuiru Castro, COICA
🔸 Wanen Kanamari, COIAB
🔸 Julio Cusurichi Palacios, AIDESEP

Our new analysis, released ahead of the summit, shows that across eleven frontier regions, 19% of Marine Protected Areas are already overlapped by active oil and gas blocks. The same expansion is encroaching on 179 million hectares of intact tropical moist forest. Read the new article in Oceanographic Magazine.

Across 11 frontier regions, 19% of Marine Protected Areas are already overlapped by active fossil fuel oil and gas blocks.
