Calif

ornia needs a system of high-quality, cost-effective long-term services and supports that strengthen the person, his or her family, caregivers, circles of support, and the community at large. That system must promote the person’s well-being and social participation, promote economic independence, prevent impoverishment and remove barriers to employment.

The Call for Coordinated Dementia Care:
Growing Older with Down Syndrome or Other Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

As recently as 1983, a person with Down syndrome lived to be only 25 years old on average. Today, the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome is nearly 60 years – and continuing to climb. Unfortunately, this increase in lifespan has revealed an additional health risk. As individuals with Down syndrome age, they are at a 7 times greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than the general population. In addition, all adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are at elevated risk for dementia.

Retirement income is being outpaced by rising costs of housing, health, and care. Older and disabled adults are struggling to meet basic needs, and as a result of shrinking affordability, they are at the center of California’s housing and homelessness crisis. We need rent stabilization to help older and disabled adults afford fair market rents.

By 2030 in California, there will be an 88% increase in older adults with self-care limitations and a 54% increase in demand for the healthcare workforce. Let’s address California’s growing healthcare crisis with targeted funding for the older and disabled adult caregiving workforce in this year’s state budget.

A lot of big-hearted people participated in CCLTSS Capitol Advocacy Day last week in support of California’s older and disabled adults.

They did so because a growing population of 8 million elders and disabled citizens make California their home—many of whom rely on unpaid family caretakers.

We need to put long-term care supports in place to relieve families of the financial, emotional, and physical strains of caretaking.

We're thrilled that the California Collaborative for Long-Term Services and Supports Advocacy Day 2022 was so successful!

We had productive discussions in all our policy priority areas, including affordability issues, dealing with the caregiver crisis, and strengthening California's fractured service delivery system.

We deeply appreciate everyone who dedicated their time and expertise to our ongoing work on these critical issues affecting older Californians and persons with disabilities.
