April is National Month of Hope, which is all about celebrating the power of hope — the belief that things will work out, especially when it seems otherwise. Have you ever noticed how frequently the word ‘hope’ is used in our everyday conversations? Well, this is because hope is a concept that is deeply rooted in our culture and society. So don’t give up and let’s become bearers of hope — spread it and teach it! Because this is the best you can do for yourself and others; to always choose hope over hopelessness.

March is Self-Injury Awareness Month ❤️‍🩹

This is a chance to set aside the stigma, understand the problem, and be more open about mental health recovery.

Self-injury or self-harm is a response to severe emotional distress. Intentional, non-suicidal injuries are a way for a person to mirror psychological pain with physical pain. Far too many people suffer needlessly because they're afraid of being judged.

If you or someone you know is suffering from self harm, please call the Sacramento Mental Health 24-hour crisis line at (916) 875-1055 OR text a crisis counselor at 741741. Please remember you are never alone.

Did you know that the month of December is Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month?

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.

Above we have provided a self-care checklist that you can use each day to try to alleviate some of the symptoms of SAD.

If you would like to talk to someone about what you're going through, please feel free to call the Consumer Operated Warmline at
(916) 366-4668 M-F 9 AM-5 PM!

Today, Saturday November 20th, is International Survivors of Su***de Day. In 1999, Senator Harry Reid, who lost his father to su***de, introduced a resolution to the United States Senate, leading to the creation of International Survivors of Su***de Loss Day. Also known as Survivor Day, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by su***de can join together for healing and support. It was determined that Survivor Day would always fall on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, as the holidays are often a difficult time for su***de loss survivors. Here at the Warmline and Older Adult Program we stand in solidarity with those who have lost loved ones to su***de, and are here to provide supportive listening and referrals upon request. 💜💙

Below is a link from the American Su***de Prevention Foundation that provides different resources for those affected by su***de.

Happy National Take A Hike Day! 🥾🏔🌎🌲🍃

Whether you have major depression or simply want to improve your emotional health, start finding ways to get outdoors each day. Absorb nature with all of your senses. Listen to the birds, smell freshly cut grass, dip your toes in a pond or stream. If you usually exercise in a gym, try taking your workout outside — go for a walk, a run, a hike, or a bike ride. Head outside to have lunch or dinner.

Spending time in nature can’t replace your prescribed depression treatment plan, but it can be a helpful complement to it. There’s something about the great outdoors that soothes the soul. “Gratitude and mindfulness, beauty and serenity are inherent in nature. The silence of nature quiets the mind and offers a person the opportunity to get in touch with the core of the self.
