Hugs From Hayley Race for Maine Children's Cancer

Hugs From Hayley Race for Maine Children's Cancer In 2008 Hayley Desjardins was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow failure disease called Aplastic Anemia. This was a very successful event.

The Biddeford/S**o Elks hosted the First Annual "Hugs For Hayley 5k Run and Fun Walk" as a way to raise money for Hayley and her family. Hayley received several treatments for her illness, had many hospitalizations, and received numerous blood and platelet transfusions under care from the doctors with Maine Children's Cancer Program. And now we are happy to report that Hayley is doing FANTASTIC! I

n 2009 Hayley's family and the Biddeford/S**o Elks held the 2nd Annual Hugs From Hayley 5k Race and Fun Walk with all proceeds to benefit Maine Children's Cancer Program. The 5k has been held annually since 2009 and over $100,000.00 has been raised and donated to MCCP!!

Most of you know that MCCP is a program close to our hearts since Hayley was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia at 5 years old. She had a bone marrow transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital when she was 13. (She is now doing great!) She was able to receive many of her treatments and care through MCCP. We are so fortunate to have a facility with world class doctors, nurses, and social workers right here in Maine to treat our most vulnerable.

After having the Hugs From Hayley Event for Maine Children’s Cancer for 11 consecutive years, and raising well over $100,000, we had to cancel last year because of the pandemic. We were on the fence about whether or not to hold it this year and ultimately, decided to wait another year.

With that being said, we have decided to raise money by joining the MCCP team and doing the Maine Marathon. Mike and the girls were not on board to do a full marathon--or even a half marathon. (they have told me countless times that they “do not” run).

So…..I proposed the relay: we could each do a leg of about 6 miles….not a problem, right? That did not go over well. Then, I received an email from Gretchen (the coordinator of the MCCP team for the Maine Marathon) that they are introducing the Marathon streak. I tried again….”we could all do 1 mile a day for 26 days!” They agreed (reluctantly). SO, we are committed as a family; Mike, myself, Hayley, Maddie, and even the girls’ grandmother (who they call Danna) to running a mile a day for 26 days, starting October 3rd. I will partner up with Mike. The girls and Danna will not run with us because they are afraid they will be embarrassed. Why, do you ask? Well, Mike being Mike is not going to run without drawing attention to himself. There will be some surprises! Be on the lookout for a tall man running on the streets of S**o during the month of October. Intrigued? Follow us for some fun to benefit a GREAT cause!

Please consider donating--not just because Mike is sacrificing his dignity, but because MCCP is an incredible program with an incredible staff!!

This is Childhood Cancer.... it not only affects the children with the disease. Can you imagine as a child having your sibling gone from home and not knowing why. As a parent answering the question from a 3 year old “ is Hayley going to die” was incredibly difficult. I could not have honestly answered Maddie without the help from social workers at the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Please help us continue to support MCCP by attending the Hugs from Hayley event on September 22. Registration is open
