No fair-weather fans here! We bought the tickets before the wins started rolling in, and this group got to see the Sox take home another W!

This trip was part of our "All Ages" Bus Trip offerings. We plan 3-4 per year and are always looking for ideas on where to take you! We take care of the transportation and tickets, hopefully making it easier for you and your families to attend these special events. We will be planning one more for the year. Stay tuned for the announcement later this fall!

We are excited to bring back the 2nd session of our Couch to 5K Program this fall! Join our Couch to 5K program, designed for beginners who want to build endurance, improve fitness, and have fun along the way. Or for those who already run and want to be held accountable each week. Over 9 weeks, we’ll gradually work from little or no running to completing a full 5K (3.1 miles).

The group will meet once per week for a group run/walk workout. These weekly meet-ups help keep everyone accountable, supported, and training together.

Wednesdays: 5pm-6pm starting September 2nd!

Participants will also follow a simple training plan on their own 2–3 additional days each week. Each week builds progressively so your body adapts safely and confidently. At the end of the program, we’ll celebrate our progress by running the Heart of Biddeford I HEART BIDDEFORD 5K race together as a group—a fun and rewarding way to reach the finish line!

August has been a busy one, but we would finally like to recognize our monthly spotlight for this month: Joe Paul!! Joe just completed his 5th summer with us and will be recognized next month at his actual 5-year milestone mark with S**o Parks and Recreation. Joe moved to Maine in 2020 and joined SPR shortly after. Along with the experience and background he has, Joe brings versatility to the team, as well as a positive attitude, and great energy.

In the 5 years he has already worked with almost all of our summer camp age groups, including Twin City Theater Academy, and has succeeded at every level. He dedicates his time to the department, often working weeknights and weekends so that our youth sports & teen place programming operate and run smoothly. “Coach Joe” has a busy fall ahead as he is in charge of the entire youth soccer program and SPR Teen Place. With almost 400 participants, this season’s soccer program is one of the largest we have had to-date. A testament to Joe’s attention to this sport and his passion for the game.

He is most excited to add new programs for the community and is hoping to bring back the Teen Cooking Program this winter. Stay tuned for more and help us thank Joe when you see him on the field!

More than 250 community members have signed up for the City’s new ongoing survey tool, FlashVote! Will you join your neighbors to add your voice to community conversations?

Sign up online at our link in the comments or call (775) 235-2240 to participate by phone or text only.

By signing up, you’ll get a short, one-minute survey every few months. Plus, FlashVote makes sure your feedback is always anonymous.

The topic will typically change with every survey, and surveys could ask for your thoughts on issues such as coastal resiliency, traffic safety, housing, budget priorities, economic development, parks and recreation, communications preferences, parking, public safety, conservation, and more.

When enrolling, you can determine how surveys are received – whether by email, text, or phone call. You’ll receive a notification whenever there is a new survey, and you will have 48 hours to participate before voting closes. Once a survey is closed, everyone who participates will automatically receive a summary of the overall results and be able to see how their responses compare to the group.

Sign up now so you don’t miss the first survey, coming later this summer!

Last week we held our final Picnic & Paddle night of the season! This was our largest one to date, with a mix of canoes, SUP boards, and kayaks. It was a beautiful night on the S**o River. Thank you to Thornton Academy for the equipment collaboration. We are looking forward to planning more river recreation in 2027!

Thank you City of S**o Government Communications Department for taking these awesome photos and capturing our fleet from above!

Another successful SPR Hoops Classic, and our 6th annual! These photos capture the smiles, healthy competition, athleticism, and passion that this day brings out across all camps!

This year was our largest one yet with 3 teams of staff playing in a round robin format. The dances by each camp set the bar high for years to come, we had popcorn, confetti, and more! This year Team Dylan took the trophy home and our head senior staff member, Sophia Calley, from Chickadee Camp earned herself MVP!! What a day!

Before the games began, we acknowledged our Youth Sports Coordinator, Meg Gribbin, who will be inducted into the UNE Athletics Hall of Fame this fall for her years playing basketball at the college. Meg was the starting point guard for the Nor’easters 112 times during her career and stacked up a 101-18 overall record from 2012-16. She is the school’s all-time career leader in total assists and assists per game among several other records and incredible feats as a college athlete. We are so lucky to have her on our team as a true leader in youth sports for this community!

Thank you City of S**o Government Communications Department for these photos!
