So many people have asked me this question: what is Exchange like?
Exchange is Change. Rapid, brutal, unexpected, overwhelming and most of all constant change. Change in lifestyle, country, language, friends, parents, schools, houses, simply everything.
Exchange is going from thinking you know who you are, to having no idea who you are anymore, to being someone new. It's discovering who you really are.
Exchange is uncomfortable. It's feeling out of place, like a fifth wheel. It's knowing what it feels like to be alone, with no one to talk to, no one you know. It's stepping out of your comfort zone in everything you do.
Exchange is thinking. All the time. About everything. The strange food, the strange people, the differences. It's missing home, but also not being sure what home is.
Exchange is new. It's trying new things and being openminded. It's making memories. It's creating a new life within one year.
Exchange is culture shock. It's hating everything about where you are for a while. It's wanting to give up and go home. It's homesickness. It's discovering how strong you really are.
Exchange is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It's leaving everything you know and love behind for months. It's crying whenever you think about home, but also crying when you think about leaving your new one.
Exchange is absolutely worth it. Worth every single tear you shed, worth every memory you made, worth every day that you wanted to give up.
Exchange is not vacation, it's a new life that you built for yourself, always knowing you are going to have to leave it behind.
Exchange is the best thing that ever happened to me, because it made me grow as a person. It taught me how to be independent and strong. It taught me how to make friends and how to keep going, no matter how hard you want to stop.
