The Sac City Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Board is moving forward with a planting project at Bob Slough that focuses on growth, appearance, and long term resilience. A back row of hybrid poplar trees, protected by white tubes, has been planted as a fast growing screen. These trees can grow three feet or more per year and reach heights of up to 60 feet. In front of them, a line of red-osier dogwoods has been added. These shrubs grow about 12 to 24 inches per year and will reach 10 to 15 feet tall, with bright red stems in winter and seasonal foliage during the growing months.

Additional plantings across the area will include red oak, bur oak, chinkapin oak, white pine, and northern pecan to prevent disease from wiping out a single species and to create stronger biodiversity. The remaining area of Bob Slough, stretching toward the river, will be seeded with native grasses and wildflowers. The future home of the Off Highway Vehicle recreation area will also be restored with native grasses and flowers after cleanup work is completed, supported by a REAP grant.
