“I’m reminded of a professor who once told me not to be too precious about my art—to be willing to scrape the canvas clean and begin again. That’s where I am now, and I’m looking forward to sharing my ever-evolving artistic journey with you all.” ~Amy Tilton

“For my meeting with the Rye Art Study Group, I will show a selection of my digital photographs, small 3D pieces, a selection of photo books and perhaps a collage or two. We can have a conversation about what I show and what the Group sees.”

Rye Art Study member, Darleen Chadwick hosted our book club this week. The group discussed A Short Life of Trouble: Forty Years in the New York Art World by Marcia Tucker

None of us were aware of Marcia before this read, but are all fans of hers after reading about her challenges, passions, and fortitude.
Her nickname was Marching Marcia.
Most of the artists she championed we didn’t know but with some research found out about so many fascinating artists.

If you’re looking for a memoir full of inspiration and art knowledge, this is a great read.  Marcia was a brilliant and creative writer and lived a very fulfilling and challenging life.

This week Margaret led the group in a live demo stressing the importance of staying loose and working in Plein Air because of the natural lighting

It was wonderful to watch her pull flowers out and then snuggle them back into the leaves

“As an artist, my job is to observe as much as to create. With every second that passes, light changes, colors adjust, and the slightest physical shift occurs in nature. To understand this , I must spend a significant amount of time outdoors, directly experiencing and observing the land. In this way, even subtle colors come alive.”
