Same as bean gap

Long before there were highways through these mountains, there was a single narrow notch in the ridges that changed the course of American history, and most of us carry its story in our blood without even knowing it. 🌄

It was called the Cumberland Gap, a natural pass where Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee come together, worn low through the mountains first by buffalo, then by the Cherokee and Shawnee who followed the game. In 1775, a hunter named Daniel Boone and a crew of axemen widened those ancient paths into a rough trace known as the Wilderness Road. It was little more than a trail through the wild, steep and dangerous, but it was a door in the mountain wall.

Through that gap they came by the hundreds of thousands. Scots-Irish and German families, English settlers, freed and enslaved people, whole clans with everything they owned loaded on packhorses and their children walking beside them. They faced sickness, hunger, hard weather, and worse, all for the promise of land and a fresh start on the far side of the mountains. By the time the road quieted, more than three hundred thousand people had passed through that one narrow notch to settle Kentucky and the country beyond.

That is why the Cumberland Gap deserves to be remembered. It was the funnel through which so much of Appalachia and the whole American heartland was peopled. If you trace your family tree back far enough, there is a fair chance your own ancestors stood in that pass, looked out over a sea of blue ridges, and walked forward into an unknown life. 🧭

They carried their fiddles and their Bibles, their seeds and their surnames, and they built everything we know out of hope and hard walking. Every mountain family came through a gap in the hills. Somewhere back there, yours did too.
