Yesterday, we were contacted by a community member about a young injured starling. Although this is not technically part of our organization’s mission of assisting in disasters, we were pleased to provide direction and resources to this kindhearted person. They transported the bird to Vins Nature Center where the rehab staff tended to the bird’s injuries. Sadly, the bird did not survive, but we take comfort knowing that the bird knew loving kindness and mercy.

Saturday was a whirlwind, as we started getting busloads of Rutland flood evacuees, and their pets, around 5:00 AM. By 8:00 AM everyone was settled in. We felt honored and humbled when we were thanked so sincerely by the residents for providing a safe haven for their beloved dogs and cats– we were overwhelmed by their heartfelt gratitude.

It was a stressful situation for everyone, and those pet families prioritized comforting their fuzzy companions. It was a joy for us to take a break while watching them love on their pets. By late afternoon, the welcome news arrived that the majority of the residents could return to their homes. A few tears were shed as we helped the animals back into their carriers, made sure the residents had enough food, litter, and supplies to last them a few days, wished them good luck and waved goodbye as they boarded the buses back home.

A scared wee Chihuahua wagging her tail when she sees her dad approaching; a cat who left a love note in the litter box; faithful service animals who stayed close to their owners, and stories of those dogs saving the lives of their humans – these moments are why we do what we do. 💜🐾🐾💜

Once again Rutland County Humane Society comes through for us. Our team was at the shelter setting up more crates at 4:00 AM, and by 8:30 we had plenty of food donations from our RCHS friends. Please support them with a donation!

It’s hard to describe the devastation our small state has gone through in the past several days. The floods have decimated many towns. Even when the flood waters subside, there are so many people who have lost their homes and their belongings, and many scared pets who don’t understand what is happening, and these families will need support for weeks and months to come. RADART has been staffing the pet shelter side of Rutland‘s Red Cross shelter since Tuesday. Last night we had to evacuate humans and animals to a safe part of the building during a tornado warning. This is an especially frightening time for animals. RADART is honored to provide food, shelter, and comfort to our critter friends.

We thank VDART, Inc - Vermont Disaster Animal Response Team and Rutland County Humane Society for providing resources and support!

If you can, please donate to RADART, VDART, or any animal shelter in Vermont. Many shelters have taken in displaced animals while their families get back on their feet. Money is best, so the shelters can purchase the supplies that are specifically needed.

The unprecedented rain and flooding has devastated our small, but resilient state. Vermont is all about neighbors helping neighbors, and RADART is proud to serve our community. As of now, Wednesday evening, we are still set up with an animal shelter in conjunction with the Red Cross shelter at the Rutland High School. If you, or anyone you know, needs shelter for your family and your pets, we are here for you.
