There was a Finnish language newspaper published in Fitchburg, Massachusetts starting in 1905, and it outlasted very nearly the entire immigrant press that once surrounded it. ☕
Finns began arriving in north central Massachusetts in the 1870s and came heavily through the 1890s and 1900s, pulled in by the paper mills, the machine shops and the granite work. They settled thick enough on one slope of the city that people simply called it Finn Hill. What makes the community unusual is what they built once they got there. Most immigrant groups in Massachusetts anchored themselves on a parish. The Finns anchored themselves on cooperatives. They pooled money and opened their own grocery, their own bakery, their own dairy, their own insurance society, all member owned and run on one member one vote. If you wanted bread or milk or a small loan, you went to something you partly owned.
They also built a society park out in the hills with a hall, a stage and a sauna, and they kept the sauna in the same position it holds in Finland, which is to say it was not a luxury and it was not a spa. It was where you got clean and where arguments got settled. Midsummer bonfires still burn out there. 🔥
The paper was called Raivaaja, which means The Pioneer. It ran for well over a century in a language almost nobody outside the community could read, and it stands among the longest running Finnish language publications ever produced outside Finland. Not bad for a mill city an hour northwest of Boston. If you grew up around Fitchburg or Gardner, we would like to hear whether the Finnish side of it was still visible when you were a kid.
