Rutherford lost a wonderful woman from our community. A wonderful talent, wife mother and a full life.
Shelia Audrey Weil (née Swenson) exited the stage in the early hours of Saturday, July 11, 2026. Born in New Jersey on March 29, 1933, to longtime Rutherford residents Helen and Arthur Swenson, Shelia was a gifted singer who studied voice from an early age.
A graduate of both Rutherford public schools and Abbott Academy, Shelia attended Connecticut College, where she continued her vocal studies, and was the winner of the New Jersey Griffin Piano Prize for Classical Voice. Later, she began auditioning for musical theater roles as a diversion and fell in love with the art form. Shelia performed at the leading East Coast summer stock theaters, including the Carousel Theater in Framingham, MA. It was there she met her future husband, Wayne Weil, while he was on leave from the Army. Shelia then began performing in New York City, first in “The Happiest Fella” at City Center, and then later as part of the original Broadway casts of “Greenwillow” and “Camelot.”
In 1961, Shelia and Wayne were married at the Women’s Club in Rutherford. At the end of her Broadway run, the newlyweds returned to Rutherford, where they remained to raise their family. Shelia was a lifelong congregant of Grace Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for many years. She was an active PTA member for Pierrepont School, which both her children attended. Shelia also devoted many years of service to the Women’s Club of Rutherford, including following in her mother’s steps by serving as President from 1984-1986. During her later years, Shelia became SCUBA certified, all the more impressive given she learned to swim as an adult. She was a passionate Yankees fan, a lover of chocolate, and a devoted dog owner.
Perhaps her favorite role, though, was as mother to her two children, Wayne Jr. and Julia, and proud and loving grandmother of three treasured grandsons: Elliott Weil, Garrett Weil, and Jude Lazarus. She is survived by all, as well as by her husband, closest companion, and dearest love, Wayne Sr. We will all miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Rutherford Community Chest.
