💜EDUCATE. EMPOWER. SUPPORT. PREVENT. 💜
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
During our September chapter meeting, the Junior Auxiliary of Ruston had the privilege of welcoming Robbie Williams, an advocate with DART (Domestic Abuse Resistance Team), as our guest speaker.
Ms. Williams shared valuable information about domestic violence, its impact on individuals and families, and the importance of recognizing warning signs, supporting survivors, and breaking the cycle of abuse.
Here are a few important things we learned:
Domestic violence isn’t always physical. Abuse can also be emotional, verbal, psychological, financial, or digital.
Children are affected, too. Witnessing domestic violence can have lasting emotional, behavioral, and developmental effects on children.
Abuse does not discriminate. Domestic violence can affect individuals regardless of age, race, gender, education, or economic background.
Support makes a difference. Listening without judgment, believing survivors, and offering encouragement can help someone feel less alone.
Resources are available. DART provides advocacy, education, safety planning, and connections to resources for individuals and families affected by domestic violence.
Awareness saves lives. Recognizing the signs of abuse and knowing where to seek help are important steps toward prevention.
