🛤️ The highest point in Ohio is in Logan County, and it sits beside a school parking lot. You can drive right up to it.

Campbell Hill tops out at 1,549 feet, which is respectable for Ohio and would be a rounding error almost anywhere out west. It is on the grounds of a career center in Bellefontaine, marked with a stone and a sign, and it is one of the easiest state high points in the country to reach. There is no hike. There is a parking space.

The better story is downtown. In 1891 Bellefontaine paved Court Avenue in concrete, and it is generally recognized as the oldest concrete street in America still in use. You can walk on it. The scored slabs are right there under your feet, worn smooth, having outlasted more than a century of everything that has rolled over them. The town also claims the shortest street in America, McKinley Street, which is a little over twenty feet long.

🛣️ A Logan County town of about thirteen thousand people is where America first tried paving a street with concrete, and it happened almost as a dare.

In 1891 Bellefontaine let an inventor named George Bartholomew lay a section of Portland cement concrete around the courthouse square. The city was skeptical enough that Bartholomew had to post a bond guaranteeing the surface would hold up for five years. It held up considerably longer than that. Court Avenue is still there, still concrete, and is generally recognized as the oldest concrete street in the country.

Bellefontaine also claims the shortest street in America, McKinley Street, which runs roughly fifteen feet end to end. And because the town sits on the highest ground in Ohio, it spent much of the twentieth century as an unlikely ski destination, with rope tows running on slopes that would make a Coloradan laugh and that were absolutely enough for an Ohio kid. ⛷️

Very Important!! Please read/share!

BHB has reached a critical point in its life. Our board of officers have served their term limits and an election is needed before the end of this calendar year. We have reached out to our towing families, but still need more volunteers willing to serve! If this is not achieved, then BHB will have to cease operations at the end of this season! That is like a dagger to me heart to have to say out loud . But it's the reality we face!

ANYONE who has a desire to serve on our board, please speak up! This is not a huge time consuming commitment, as we can do a lot of work electronically and remote, so living here is not an issue. We need dedicated volunteers that believe in what we do, and can bring fresh and new ideas to the table. Our board and all our other volunteers are not going anywhere, but have simply served our term limits. We will definitely mirror/shadow the President and Treasurer positions as well as the others until the new administration feels comfortable.

A mother beluga whale escaped from a research facility just to find her baby again.

Scientists temporarily moved a female beluga from Alaska’s Cook Inlet to a marine research facility after she gave birth. They wanted to study her recovery before returning her to the wild. They believed her calf was old enough to survive on its own, so they thought separating them for a short time would be safe.

But from the moment she arrived, the mother behaved strangely. Instead of settling down, she repeatedly circled the same section of the enclosure, almost as if she was searching for a way out.

Then, before sunrise one morning, security cameras captured something nobody expected...

The beluga launched herself out of the research facility and disappeared into the open ocean, heading back to her baby.
