Please take this advice to heart. If someone tells you not to talk to family or friends, they do not have your interests in mind. Scamming older people and people who are not tech-savvy is a serious problem, and everyone should be made aware of how it happens. Talk to your loved ones who may be vulnerable and help them recognize how these perpetrators work. If you have been a victim, there is no shame in having wanted to be a good person. Help spread the word about how this happens, and you may be able to prevent others from falling victim.

We recently took another report of an "elderly" person who was scammed ($13,000).
After receiving an alert on the cell phone and calling the number, a confident and convincing official-sounding person explained how someone had hacked the Amazon account, which was connected to a bank account, and an investigation was underway by federal banking authorities - nobody could be trusted, and don't talk to family, friends, or bank authorities as they were most likely invovled. THIS WAS ALL A LIE, but told in a fashion that it sounded real.
A trip to the bank to empty the life savings, followed by a drive to a Bitcoin machine, which had been explained as the only secure place to put the money. A picture of a driver's license had been sent to the scammers, and at least one app was installed on the cell phone. Again, don't tell your family or friends, and keep the scammers on the phone so they can hear everything you do.
Luckily, a clerk at the store knew what was happening and tried to stop our Allen County victim, but wasn't believed. The clerk quickly called our friends at the Butler County Sheriff's Office, and Deputy Weber responded. Deputy Weber arrived and quickly stopped any more money from being put into the bitcoin machine. "Only" $13,000 was lost; it had immediately been transferred out of the account as soon as it was put in. Thanks to the quick thinking and acting clerk and Deputy Weber, our victim still had some money to bring home.
For almost all of us, legitimate banks and businesses don't deal or take payments in gift cards, Google Play cards, or Bitcoin.
If something doesn't sound right, don't let a total stranger, not even a law enforcement officer, tell you to not talk to your family or trusted friends.
