Came upon an old document "The History Of Rural Retreat", author unknown, but suspected to be Louis Pepper. Louis was Dr. Charles' son, and editor of the Rural Retreat Times in the late 1800s.
The author cites three reasons why Rural Retreat is an ideal place to live. Here is Number 1:
Rural Retreat is influenced in being surrounded by the grand old mountains that rise above her, and which lift their heads high above the smaller hills and low lying valleys that surround them.
Her elevation being 2,500 feet above the sea level, making her winters mild, and her summers long and pleasant.(sic)
Words are inadequate to express the feelings of enjoyment and contentment that come upon people living in the very midst of such magnificent and soul inspiring mountains, as the celebrated Allegheny, breathing in from their infancy the pure and invigorating mountain air, and drinking of the sparkling waters of the springs, that flows so placidly from them seeking their lowest level. In early youth they become in-bred with the idea of loftiness and stability which is stamped on their very souls forever. Her climate is apparently mild all the year round, no severe winter to require any expensive apparel, no hot summers to prevent any one from enjoyment, no permanent or contagious diseases which infect many portions of the country are known here. It is one of the most healthful spots known, making it one of the most delightful summer resorts. So fortunate is Rural Retreat in her situation, that she proph[esies] it to be a place where men may dwell in joy and peace.
