Realized I won’t be back from vacation in time to run Speed Steel in May so match is cancelled.

Had another good turnout for our Monthly long range precision rimfire series benchrest match. It was chilly at the start with light winds but no sooner than we got started that the wind reared its ugly head. The 3/8 inch target at 65 yards seemed to be a trouble maker early on for everyone but Will Evans who breezed thru the early stages going 10/10 in his first round. Isaac Dasher went 9/10 his first round, showing he might be the only serious competition. Will made it thru the first 24 targets with only one miss to pad his lead. Isaac ran into some trouble mid course but made a strong run at the end missing only 1 shot on the last 10 targets.
In the end it was Will Evans with a great score of 35/30 in first place over Isaac Dasher’s 39/30 for second place. Eddie Bridges was the only other shooter to finish the course of fire with a 49/30 to take third place.
Will also managed a near bullseye to take the closest to the center contest at 100 yards. He took the $120 pot for that 1 shot.
To say the range is shooting different since they have stripped the land west of the range would be an understatement. With no trees to break up the wind currents our little 40 grain bullets seem to get pushed around much to the frustration of the rest of the entrants. We are just going to have to improve our wind reading abilities if we want to be competitive with the match winners.
Next months match will take place May 24th. Hope to see everyone there.
Thanks to Mac Brackenrich for the photos

Had a great turnout in truly horrible conditions as 15 brave (or silly) shooters turned out to face cold weather and gale winds as we tried to hit targets at 300 yards with .22 rifles. Snow flakes in the morning gave way to a sunny afternoon but the winds were relentless as shooters tried to score hits on the 8 inch disc. Not a single double digit run was scored all day and we were beginning to wonder if anyone would even break 20. After the first two rounds it looked like Will Evans would be taking his usual first place finish but Ed Ranck put together two good runs in the fourth and fifth rounds to put the pressure on Will. Going into his fifth and final round Will needed 5 points to secure the win. After scoring 4 points on his first 6 shots it looked like his victory was in hand but the crazy swirling winds took their toll and he couldn’t manage that last point. In the end Will Evans and Ed Ranck ended tied with a score of 25. In case of a tie the tie breaker falls to the highest single round of the match. Since they both had high rounds of 8 it fell to their second highest rounds and Ed’s 7 bested Wills 6 points to take the win. Mac Brackenrich made a good run to end up in 3rd place. Thanks to everyone that turned out. Hopefully we will get a break in the weather next month. But I wouldn’t count on it.

Had a really light turnout for our first Speed Steel match of the year. With our usual top contestants absent it was a war of attrition between us old guys.
At the end of the day Bill Manifold edged out Bob Brown by 1/100 of a second to take 1st place overall and 1st place in Rimfire Rifle Optic class.
Bob was 1st place in Rimfire Pistol Optic.
Next match will take place May 10th if we have enough interest.

We had 9 shooters show up for our first Long Range Precision Benchrest match for 2026. We set the start time back an hour till 11 am since it was supposed to be in the 20s overnight. I thought the extra hour might give it a chance to warm up a little.
What started off as a still, calm morning quickly changed into a typical gusty afternoon as the day rolled on. I’m not sure if the trees and ground they have removed in mining next door has changed the airflow or what but this is by far the worst scores we have ever posted . You know it’s gonna be a tough day when Will Evans shoots a 45/30 and was the only shooter to clean the course of fire.
Neil McMillion ended up in second place with a 50 plus 2 targets. Once the shooters reach 50 rounds fired we just add the remaining targets left to their score.
In an unusual turn of events we had 4 shooters with a 50 plus 5 score so we went to the closest to the bullseye money shot for the tie breaker. Eddie Bridges was closest to the bullseye so in addition to 3rd place overall he took home the $90 pot from the side bet. Next match will take place April 26th. We’ll move back to our normal 10am start time. Hope to see you there.

The 2026 season kicked off with 11 shooters and a wind that clearly didn’t want anyone posting a good score. Gusts kept everyone guessing, making wind calls difficult at best and embarrassing at worst.

Will Evans quickly showed he was the man to beat, becoming the only shooter to post double-digit rounds all day. Isaac Dasher tried to make things interesting, closing the gap to within 5 points in rounds 3 and 4, but Will held the lead and finished with a 38 for the win. Isaac finished with a 28 for second, and Bob Brown managed a 22 to hang on to third place.

Either we all need more practice or our range has the most difficult conditions anywhere. After 550 rounds downrange, the 4-inch disc survived the entire day without a single called hit. Most shooters were just happy to ring the 8-inch disc a few times each stage.

Maybe next month will be better… but I’m not betting on it.

We will be awarding a series trophy to the shooter with the most accumulated points at the end of the season so the more matches you compete in the better your chances.

If you didn’t get enough embarrassment today, join us next Sunday for our first Precision Rimfire Benchrest Match. Sign-up and sight-in from 9–11 AM with the match starting at 11 AM. Thirty targets ranging from 25 to 232 yards will test your skill with a .22 rimfire rifle.

Think you can do better? Come prove it.

Had some of the gang get together for an impromptu long gong match. As usual it was cold, damp and the wind was howling. Pat McMillion had a couple good runs to outpace the rest of us with a final score of 36. Most were holding 3-4 mils windage and when the wind let up we looked kinda silly missing 2 feet the other way. As of now we are planning to start our monthly matches the end of this month with Long Gong on March 22 and the Precision Longrange Rimfire Series on March 29. Of course that’s weather permitting. Today reminded us that the 70 degree days are still an anomaly.

think I'll order us some new trophy pins 😈😈
