BUILT FOR SPEED!

The Canada Bunchberry is thought to have among the fastest known plant movements in the world. Its catapults pollen at a rate so fast, a camera would need to capture 10,000 frames per second to capture the motion! Read more here: https://northernwoodlands.org/discoveries/at_the_speed_of_pollen

CEDAR WAXWINGS

These fruit-loving birds were recently spotted at the bog.

Fun Fact: According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology the name "waxwing" comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondary feathers of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help attract mates.

In the last month our volunteers have stepped up with hundreds of hours of work! Whether it be removing windows from the Nature Center and replacing the rotted framing, painting the interior of the Nature Center, hosting school educational and work groups, or replacing rotten boardwalk boards, we are beyond grateful. Look for continued work on trails this summer.

REMEMBERING AL PORTS

Al Ports was a driving force in our buying the final parcel of private land abutting the Bog, which let us complete the walk all the way around the Bog pond without leaving the natural area.

A note from his family regarding the walk on Saturday May 16:
Laura will lead a walk to one of Dad's most cherished landscapes with members of the Rumney Ecological Systems, a nonprofit that protects the bog and with whom Dad served on the board. Please plan to meet at the trailhead at the end of Cranberry Bog Road (lower kiosk, not trailhead at Nature Center) at 12 noon. Weather looks to be mild. Please consider bug dope to help prevent ticks.
