🌟 Celebrating Strength, Hope, and Community

Sunday, June 7th is National Cancer Survivors Day—a day to pause, honor, and celebrate the incredible individuals in our community who have looked cancer in the face and kept moving forward.

A "survivor" is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the rest of life. Here in Lincoln County and Mescalero, our survivors are our neighbors, our family members, our coworkers, and our friends. Your resilience inspires us every single day.

Today, we don't just celebrate survivorship; we also want to send a wave of gratitude to the families, friends, healthcare workers, and caregivers who walk alongside our survivors every step of the way. No one fights alone.

💛 To our local survivors: We see you, we honor your journey, and we are so proud to have you as part of our community fabric.

If you or a loved one are navigating life after a diagnosis and looking for local support groups, health resources, or wellness guidance, please reach out to us or visit our resource directory.

👁️ Clear Vision for a Brighter Future: June is Cataract Awareness Month

Did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States? June is Cataract Awareness Month, a timely reminder to prioritize your vision and protect your eye health.

A cataract is a gradual clouding of the eye's natural lens, which can make everyday tasks like reading, driving, or seeing a loved one's face look blurry or dim.

What You Should Know About Cataracts:

They are incredibly common: While most cataracts develop as a natural part of aging, they can also be influenced by factors like diabetes, smoking, or prolonged sun exposure.

Protect your eyes from UV rays: Living in our beautiful, high-altitude region means stronger sunlight. Wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, along with a wide-brimmed hat, is one of the easiest ways to slow down cataract progression.

Regular exams are key: In their early stages, cataracts might not cause noticeable changes. Comprehensive dilated eye exams can catch cataracts and other eye diseases early, when treatments are most effective.

👓 Vision loss doesn't have to be a permanent part of aging. Modern cataract surgery is highly safe, common, and effective at restoring clear vision.

🪵 Take Charge of Your Health: June is Men’s Health Month!

June isn’t just about shifting into summer—it’s also Men’s Health Month! This month is a vital reminder for men and boys to prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

4 Small Steps that Make a Big Difference:

📋 Schedule that Checkup: Don't wait until something is wrong to see a doctor. Routine screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes can catch issues early when they are most treatable.

🧠 Prioritize Mental Fitness: Mental health is physical health. Stress, anxiety, and depression affect everyone. Talking to someone or seeking professional support is a sign of true strength.

🏃‍♂️ Move Daily: Finding regular ways to stay active right here in our beautiful region—whether hiking, ranching, or walking—keeps your heart and joints strong.

🥕 Fuel Your Body: Simple shifts like drinking more water, adding more whole foods to your plate, and limiting alcohol can drastically improve your everyday energy.

SUN Bucks benefits for eligible New Mexico students are expected to begin June 15, 2026.

SUN Bucks is a one-time summer benefit issued per eligible student to help families buy food while school is out.

Some families may receive their SUN Bucks card before benefits are loaded. Benefits will not be available prior to June 15.

✔ Check your mailbox
✔ Keep your previous SUN Bucks card
✔ Benefits may be added to last year’s card

You may receive a new SUN Bucks card if:
✔ Your student is newly eligible
