We have been getting questions about the Albertsons’ requests for ‘food bank’ donations when you check out. For transparency and clarity, those donations do NOT go to the Lincoln County Food Bank.
If anyone specifically enquires, the cashiers will clarify that the money is going to the Roadrunner Runner/Feeding America organization, which then distributes food throughout the state. It’s great if you want to support their organization, but it needs to be made clearer who you are donating to at Albertsons.
People have been confused and upset when they find out the donations are not going to our local food bank. We hope to visit with management and see if they will instruct their employees to say ‘Road Runner’, versus ‘the food bank’.
We are a stand-alone nonprofit food bank, started by concerned citizens, that has been in existence since 1986. ALL of our staff, board members and technical support are unpaid volunteers. Rather than donations being funneled through and controlled by governmental, or umbrella organizations that have paid employees.
There are several local nonprofits, and churches who distribute food boxes and cook free community meals, who like us, operate solely with the help of volunteers.
We do want to once again thank, not only the local organizations and individuals who are stepping up to help us carry the additional clients, since the fires/floods and government shut down. But we also want to acknowledge Albertsons for weekly allowing us to pick up extra foods that are nearing their expiration date.
And more recently a wonderful nonprofit, La Planta, has been donating fresh produce, as well as some beans and rice.
This is not a post to complain, but instead to clarify the questions, we are getting.
Every donation to our local organizations help, whether food, or funds, and ALL go to helping feed our neighbors in need.
