The cost of underfunding domestic violence services isn’t measured only in dollars. It’s measured in lives, lost opportunities, and safety placed out of reach.

It’s the survivor who has nowhere safe to go. The child waiting for stability. The advocate answering one more crisis call while carrying the weight of an overwhelmed system. The shelter with empty beds because there isn’t enough funding to staff them.

Across New Mexico, domestic violence programs are being asked to do more with less, while the need for their services continues to grow.

Safety should never depend on a program’s ability to stretch an already exhausted budget.

Investing in domestic violence services is investing in our children, our families, and the future of our communities.

We cannot continue to call domestic violence a crisis while failing to adequately fund the very services working to address it.

The cost of underfunding is too high. The cost of inaction is even higher.

New Mexico’s survivors deserve more than awareness. They deserve action, investment, and a lasting commitment to safety.

Safety can’t wait. Neither can funding.

I am a survivor. I am resilient.

These are not just words. They are declarations of strength, courage, and the power to reclaim one’s life.

Survivors are more than what happened to them. They are mothers, daughters, sisters, leaders, advocates, and changemakers. They carry stories of unimaginable pain, but also stories of extraordinary courage, hope, and transformation.

Resilience does not mean the journey has been easy. It does not mean the scars have disappeared. It means that even in the face of adversity, survivors deserve the opportunity to heal, to dream, and to define their own futures.

To every survivor: Your story matters. Your voice matters. Your life matters.

You are not defined by the violence you endured. You deserve safety, dignity, love, and a future filled with possibility.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let us do more than recognize survivors’ strength. Let us build a world where surviving violence is no longer a prerequisite for living in safety.

Believe survivors. Honor their journeys. Invest in their futures.

The Cost of Domestic Violence Doesn’t Stop at Home. It Follows Children Into the Classroom.

Behind every child struggling to concentrate, every missed assignment, every unexplained absence, and every sudden change in behavior, there may be a story we cannot see.

For children living with domestic violence, school can be more than a place to learn. It can be a refuge. A place where someone notices. A place where safety, compassion, and hope begin.

But our schools are also carrying the weight of violence that happens beyond their walls. Teachers, counselors, and school staff are often among the first to recognize when a child needs help, yet too many are being asked to respond without adequate resources.

Children cannot be expected to thrive academically when they are struggling to feel safe.

In New Mexico, investing in domestic violence services is also an investment in our schools, our educators, and our children’s futures.

We cannot talk about educational success without talking about safety at home.

A child’s future should never be the price we pay for failing to address domestic violence.

Every child deserves to learn without fear. Every educator deserves support. Every family deserves access to safety.

The Cost of Silence: When Domestic Violence Becomes a Healthcare Crisis.

Domestic violence doesn’t end when the bruises fade. Its impact can live in the body for years—in chronic pain, anxiety, trauma, and lasting physical and emotional health challenges.

Behind every emergency room visit, every untreated injury, and every survivor struggling to heal is a healthcare system carrying the consequences of violence.

But the greatest cost is not measured in hospital bills. It is measured in human suffering.

Healthcare professionals are often the first to recognize the signs of abuse. Yet they cannot carry this responsibility alone.

When we underfund domestic violence services, we don’t eliminate the cost. We shift it—to our hospitals, our families, our communities, and ultimately, to survivors themselves.

Prevention is healthcare. Advocacy is healthcare. Safety is healthcare.

New Mexico must recognize that investing in survivor services is not simply a social responsibility. It is a public health necessity.

Because a healthier New Mexico begins with a safer New Mexico.

The cost of violence is shared by all of us. The responsibility to end it must be, too.
