Parks and Recreation Department Director Announced
(STANARDSVILLE, VA) -- Greene County announced today that Sean Sweeney has been promoted to the Director of Parks and Recreation. Mr. Sweeney has served as the Interim Director since Justin Bullock’s departure in February.
“I am pleased to announce the promotion of Sean Sweeney to Director of Parks and Recreation, effective April 1, 2026,” said Cathy Schafrik, County Administrator. “Mr. Sweeney has demonstrated outstanding dedication and deep commitment to serving our community and has consistently shown an ability to enhance the quality of life for our residents. I am confident that his experience and vision will further strengthen our parks system and ensure it remains a vital asset for residents and visitors alike.”
A native of nearby Earlysville, Mr. Sweeney proudly calls Greene County home and is deeply invested in serving the community that has played such an important role in his life. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 2008 and from Shepherd University in 2014 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies.
Mr. Sweeney is a Certified Youth Sports Administrator and a graduate of the Leadership Training Institute through the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society (VRPS). He remains actively engaged in the profession through his leadership and involvement in the Western Service Area of VRPS and an active participant in the VRPS State Conference.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sweeney has demonstrated a strong understanding of program development, operations, and community engagement. He has led the growth and success of a wide range of initiatives in Greene County, including youth sports leagues, instructional programs, and community events – all designed to meet the evolving needs of residents. His work reflects a deep belief in the power of recreation to strengthen communities, foster connections, and provide lifelong benefits to individuals and families.
“I am honored to serve in this role and committee to continuing to make meaningful strides in expanding recreation and leisure opportunities in Greene County,” Mr. Sweeney said. “With a hands-on leadership style and deep connection to the community, I remain focused on delivering high-quality programs and services that reflect the values and needs of the residents we serve.”
