The Golden Bark Foundation

The Golden Bark Foundation The Golden Bark foundation is a senior dog rescue located in Utah. Foster based and volunteer ran! We plan to rescue and find homes for these senior dogs.

GBF’S MISSION

The Golden Bark Foundation is dedicated to rescuing and advocating for at-risk senior dogs, fulfilling their immediate needs and sending them off to a love filled retirement home. We focus on rescuing senior dogs because they are often forgotten and cast aside at the point in their lives when they need the most care. When they end up in shelters, people prefer to adopt younger dogs

that require less care and maintenance with fuller lives ahead. They deserve to know love in the latter portions of their life. Every dog deserves a home to live out their golden years.

Today is our Grief Support Group 🤍

All are welcome, whether you’d like to share your grief or simply be a listening ear for others.

There is no timeline for grief, no right or wrong way to mourn, and no expectation to share if you’re not ready. Just come as you are.

We will meet virtually today at 5 PM MT.

Three years ago, our sweet Carlie crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving behind so much love and so many memories for those who knew her.

Carlie was the very first dog rescued by GBF. We pulled her in August 2022, right as we were preparing for our kickoff fundraiser. Not long after, we learned she was in kidney failure, making her our very first hospice dog.

Carlie was the cutest little chug. She had dementia, the longest legs, the softest fur, and a personality that made everyone smile. Nothing ever seemed to bother her. She spent her days living alongside Max—who is still with us today—and several other GBF dogs + siblings, who have since joined her at the Rainbow Bridge.

Carlie taught us so much. Lessons that are still deeply woven into everything we do today.

Losing her was heartbreaking. Grieving her was even harder and a lengthy journey. But she reminded us how worth it it is to love a dog through their final chapter. The adjustments you make for an aging dog. The early mornings and late nights. All the cleaning that comes with it. The anticipatory grief that comes when you begin noticing the changes that tell you time is running short.

She was a living reminder of why this rescue was started in the first place—because of an old dog that needed a home.

Three years later, we still honor her memory every single day. We still tell her story. We talk about her and the impact she had on shaping our mission, our values, and the rescue we are today. Heck, she’s still the wallpaper on my phone. The nose print she left on the mirror has never been cleaned off. And her little hat has been worn by so many dogs since her departure.

Seeing her on my phone, is a daily reminder that even on the hardest days in rescue—the days we feel defeated, the days humanity breaks our hearts, the days where I wonder if I should be doing this work, the days where I’ve almost given up—it’s all worth it. Every tear, every sleepless night, every hard conversation, the anxiety, sadness, countless therapy sessions, every emotion in between. Because we get to change lives. Just like we changed hers, like she changed mine.

Carlie was rescue #1–golden barks first golden girl 🤍

Blaze is an 8 year old yellow lab mix. And while you may have noticed, he has an adorable pot belly. This is due to his diagnosis of Cushings and while this has caused him to be strongly food motivated, otherwise he is not too affected. And Golden Bark has agreed to cover the cost of his medication for the rest of his life. With the love and care of his foster family, he has really bloomed! But he is still looking for his forever family! To find out more about Blaze or our other adoptable seniors check out our website: goldenbarkfoundation.org/ourdogs. If you have questions, reach out!

Happy World Cup Opening Day!

The World Cup kicks off today, and our dogs are ready to play!

We’re especially excited for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, taking place in the best city in the world (at least in my personal opinion): Mexico City!

For the next month, our seniors will be competing in our Bigs vs. Littles World Cup Challenge. Which team will score the most adoptions before the World Cup ends?

Drop your predictions in the comments!

🏆 Team Bigs Captain: Blaze

At 666 days in rescue, Blaze is our longest resident and still waiting for his forever home. Despite being an incredible dog, he’s had absolutely no adoption interest. Can Team Bigs help break his streak and score him a retirement home before the tournament is over?

🏆 Team Littles Captain: Ember

Sweet, goofy, and impossible not to love, Ember is leading Team Littles into the competition. Don’t let her size fool you—she’s determined to bring home the championship!

Who are you rooting for: Team Bigs or Team Littles?

Also, Arriba Mexico—si se puede!

New seniors ready for their retirement homes: Rambo & Sadie 🤍

Rambo is a 13-year-old Aussie mix who offers the perfect balance of playful energy and senior-dog snuggles. He's good with dogs and cats and would do best in a home without small children. Rambo takes monthly heart medication, which costs about $55 per month through Chewy.

Sadie is a 13-year-old Mini Poodle mix who wants nothing more than to be your shadow. She would love a home where someone is around often, as she thrives on companionship and attention. She does well with dogs and cats and would prefer a home with older, respectful children, as loud noises can startle her.

Check out all of GBF's available seniors! We truly have a dog for every lifestyle. If you're unsure how a dog might fit into your home, consider foster-to-adopt.

Coming soon: Yeti & Jasper! 🐾

May for GBF 🤍

Here's what your donations helped cover during the month of May:
• Vet Bills: $2,617
• Dog Food: $529
• Medications & Supplements: $792
• Foster Supplies: $67
• Grooming: $30
Total: $4,037

These numbers reflect what the rescue directly spends on our dogs. Of course, it also costs money to run a rescue, and we share those expenses in our annual report each year. We pay for insurance, technology, software subscriptions, licensing fees, and so much more that doesn't always get talked about on social media.

As summer approaches, we've also seen a huge spike in owner surrender requests. We received 19 requests in May, the most we've had in a single month this year. June has only just begun, and we're already at 5+ requests.

As a smaller rescue focused solely on senior dogs, it's often harder for us to say yes than larger organizations. Vet care for seniors can be expensive, and we typically spend anywhere from $1,500–$2k per dog, sometimes much more (sometimes less too!). That's why we unfortunately have to turn so many dogs away. If we could help everyone, we would.

The work in animal welfare has been never ending for some time. I think many of us are feeling tired and most are burnt out. Owner surrender requests never seem to stop, adoptions are slower, donations are down, and the economy certainly isn't helping. I know other rescues would agree that we could all use a break haha!

But until that day comes, we'll continue doing what we can with the resources we have—and with the support of incredible communities like this one. Every share, donation, volunteer hour, adoption, and kind word helps us keep moving forward!

Thank you for supporting our mission! Every donation, no matter the size, truly makes a difference.

Grief can feel incredibly isolating, but you don't have to carry it alone.

Join us for our next Grief Support Group on Sunday, June 14th at 5:00 PM via Zoom. Whether you've recently lost a pet or are carrying grief from years ago, this is a safe space to share, listen, and connect with others. Even if you don't feel like sharing, you're still welcome to join-there is no pressure or expectations.

Pet grief often isn't taken as seriously as human grief. But throughout all of these support group sessions, we've been reminded that grief is grief. It exists. It comes and goes. It shows up again when you least expect it. Sometimes it's in a song that comes on while you're driving, the smell of a treat they loved, or a place you used to visit together.

Grief is a valid human emotion that every one of us will experience at some point. And pet grief is just as valid as any other form of grief.

There is no right way to grieve and no timeline for healing. We're simply here to support one another through it.

Our latest Substack is all about Akirra—our beautiful tripod girl. 🤍

When it comes to reactive dogs, things can be challenging. But having the right tools, support, and game plan can make all the difference.

We’re currently working with Akirra and have a solid plan in place to help her succeed—something we’re committed to continuing in her future adoptive home. We stand by our dogs, and if someone is willing to give her a chance, we’re happy to provide guidance and support every step of the way so they feel confident and prepared to welcome her into their family.

"With the right owner to provide careful consideration of her behavioral stressors, she has all the ability to thrive."

And that's exactly what we want—to see her thrive.

Take a few minutes to read more about our sweet Akirra on our Substack. It's completely free to read! You can even subscribe and have delivered straight to your inbox whenever our amazing volunteer, Madelyn, shares a new piece.

Thank you, , for sharing your talents with our rescue and helping tell the longer stories behind GBF and the dogs we love
