Recess can be so much more than a break from class. When designed intentionally, it can become a skill-building, community-building part of the school day.

When our experts evaluate a school’s recess, here are a few things they look for: boundaries, conflict resolution, communication, engagement, adult involvement, and student leadership.

Curious how your school stacks up? Take our free Recess Checkup at recesslab.org ⭐️ It only takes 3 minutes and covers the 3 areas that matter most for all schools: safety, empowerment, and engagement.

Multiple breaks. At least 20 minutes each. Never taken away as punishment.

Recess is still unprotected in most states. Only DC and 12 states require it, and how much kids actually get usually comes down to a district decision.

Through play, kids practice critical, durable skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

These are skills they’ll rely on in the classroom, in their communities, and in future workplaces.

When students take turns, lead games, or resolve conflicts on the playground, they’re developing habits that prepare them for success.

Nobody does team building like Playworks. Our corporate partners get to have fun with their teams while supporting kids in the community.

A few playful (and impactful) ways to partner with us:

➡️ Enter a corporate kickball tournament and compete with other companies while supporting schools in your community
➡️ Repaint a school's playground so kids come back to a school that's bright and welcoming
➡️ Spend an afternoon playing with students at recess
➡️ Bring recess to your own office and watch your team turn into fourth graders again

Your team gets a day they won’t stop talking about, and kids in your community get safe and healthy play.

If interested please connect with Director of Development Stacy Wilbur at [email protected]

Let’s start planning. DM us or hit the link in bio.
