Brown Pine Trees, What to do? From Dr. Jeffrey Ward, Chief Scientist, Dept of Forestry, CAES..... To answer your question, we have received numerous reports about pines browning off after Sandy. As you guessed, the cause was most likely salt spray from the storm. It the 1938 hurricane, salt damage was noted 20+ miles inland. There is little you can do except wait and see what trees recover. This is an educated guess, but I would NOT apply fertilizer with nitrogen in the vicinity of damaged trees next year. Additional nitrogen can cause mature trees to shift from maintenance to growth (height and diameter growth). Right now we want the trees to rebuild their carbohydrate reserves that will be used in the coming month to grow new needles. Larger carbohydrate reserves will give the trees energy to defend against insects and diseases.

Rowayton Gardeners received the Lee Bauerfeld Silver Cup Award for their Rowayton Pond Invasive Control Project from 2009-2011! The Gardeners wish to thank the city of Norwalk, 6th Taxing District and the community for their support in thi
s ongoing project.

"The ROWAYTON GARDENERS started their Rowayton Pond Invasive Control project in 2009 with community colunteers pulling invasives and planting new shrubs and bulbs, including a garden of "natives", and installing two benches. This is designed as a habitat for wildlife, and has also become a focus of the community for recreational use. In spite of Hurricane Irene, the multi-year project was completed in 2011."
