Dialogue Institute Community Iftar Dinner Brings Austin Community Together in the Spirit of Ramadan
On March 5, 2026, community members from across Central Texas gathered at the Thompson Conference Center for the Dialogue Institute Community Iftar Dinner. The evening brought together people of diverse backgrounds, elected leaders, public service leaders, judges, faith leaders, non-profit leaders, academics, media and variety professions to share a meaningful experience of Ramadan through hospitality, dialogue, and friendship.
The program began with registration, where guests were welcomed into a warm and inviting atmosphere. During this time, attendees enjoyed traditional art demonstrations, including a calligraphy showcase by Mrs Akin and an ebru (water marbling) art presentation by Mr Balikci. These artistic expressions offered guests a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage associated with Turkish and Islamic traditions.
Following the art presentations, guests gathered for dinner and broke their fast together, sharing a variety of Turkish and Mediterranean dishes in a spirit of gratitude and community.
The program began with Master of Ceremonies Ms Ertuna, who guided the evening with grace and warmth, setting the tone for reflection and c***ection.
The Executive Director Mr Orhan, representing the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest, delivered the opening remarks, welcoming guests and highlighting the importance of building bridges through dialogue and shared experiences. He emphasized the role of gatherings like this in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening community bonds.
A Ramadan presentation by Mrs Gokgol followed, offering insights into the spiritual significance of the holy month. She spoke about Ramadan as a time of reflection, compassion, generosity, and self-discipline, inviting guests to appreciate the deeper meaning behind the practice of fasting.
The evening continued with a live musical performance by the music group Meral, Ece, and Habibe whose melodies added a beautiful and reflective dimension to the gathering.
The program concluded with remarks from distinguished public leaders, including State Representative Donna Howard, State Representative Lulu Flores, Pflugerville Mayor Doug Weiss and Police Chief Willie Richards, Cedar Park Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin, Austin Police Department representative Marcos Johnson, Round Rock Police Asst. Chief Justin Carmichael, and City Council Member Rudy Metayer. Each speaker reflected on the importance of unity, community engagement, and the value of coming together across differences.
The evening ended on a note of gratitude and c***ection, as guests left with a renewed sense of community and a deeper appreciation for the spirit of Ramadan.
