As we gather for Memorial Day cookouts, fireworks, parades, and family celebrations, it’s important to remember that holidays can feel very different for children in foster care. 🇺🇸💙
For many foster children, holidays can bring up painful memories, grief, uncertainty, or reminders of family separation. Loud noises, crowded gatherings, unfamiliar traditions, or even seeing other families together can become emotional triggers.
This Foster Care Awareness Month, let’s remember that healing doesn’t pause for holidays.
Here are a few ways foster parents can help:
❤️ Keep routines as consistent as possible
🤍 Prepare children ahead of time for events and gatherings
💙 Offer quiet spaces and breaks when emotions feel overwhelming
❤️ Be patient with behaviors connected to trauma
🤍 Allow children to share memories and feelings without judgment
💙 Focus on connection over perfection
And don’t forget — holidays can also become opportunities to create safe, joyful memories together 🥰
Fun Memorial Day activities foster families can enjoy:
☀️ Backyard water games or sprinklers
🍉 Family picnic at a local park
🎨 Patriotic crafts and cookie decorating
🎬 Cozy movie night after celebrations
🌭 Let kids help plan the cookout menu
🎇 Watch fireworks from a quieter location or from home
🚲 Bike rides, nature walks, or fishing trips
📸 Start a holiday memory scrapbook together
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply making a child feel safe, included, and loved during hard moments.
To all foster parents walking alongside children through both celebration and struggle — thank you. Your compassion matters more than you know. ❤️
