On Patriot Day, Texas VFW remembers the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, and we honor the extraordinary courage revealed in one of America’s darkest hours.

September 11 is a solemn reminder that America’s strength is found in the courage of its people, the resolve of those willing to serve, and the unity we demonstrate in the face of tragedy.

Today, approximately 4.4 million living Americans are Veterans of the post-9/11 era. For nearly 25 years, Veterans have continued to serve across the world, continuing the legacy of courage and sacrifice.

We will never forget those we lost. We will never forget those who sacrificed. And we will always honor the heroes who show the world what American bravery means.

Sept. 10, also known as World Su***de Prevention Day, serves as a reminder of the importance of connection, compassion and looking out for one another.

A simple conversation with somebody who’s going through a hard time can open the door to support. If you know a veteran who may be struggling, take a moment to check in. Listen to them without judgment, let them know you care, and encourage them to reach out for help when they need it.

Together, we can help create a community where veterans know they have someone in their corner.

Not just another date, August 31 marks the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in 2003 and asked hundreds of thousands of Americans to serve and sacrifice with courage far from home.

Nearly 4,500 U.S. service members did not return home.
Another 31,994 service members were wounded in action.
And still today, injuries and illnesses have emerged, persist, and are diagnosed years later.

The mission ended. The effects of service did not.

Veterans returning home have continued to experience health conditions associated with the hazards and exposures of military service. A reminder of the magnitude of what service members have been asked to do and the responsibility that comes with asking them to do it.

Honor the Contract is a reminder of the commitment made when these men and women raised their right hands and signed their enlistment contracts.
Those benefits are not charity. They are not a handout. They are not something a Veteran must prove they deserve. And they should not be up for negotiation after the fact. They were earned.

The VFW continues to call on our nation to Honor the Contract,
Oppose Section 108 of the Take Care of America's Veterans Act,
Stop the reduction of future Veterans' disability compensation to fund other provisions of the legislation

Pass TCAVA without asking one generation of Veterans to sacrifice benefits earned by another.

On this commemoration day, we remember those who served, honor those who never came home, and recognize the strength and sacrifice of the generations who answered the call.

2026-2027 VFW Auxiliary National Veterans & Family Support Ambassador Beth West's focus this year is on Post-Traumatic Stress and mental health awareness.

She explains, "This is very personal for me and something I am passionate about as a spouse to and granddaughter of veterans who struggled/are struggling with PTS. The family suffers, too. Secondary PTS is perhaps less recognized and diagnosed than PTS, yet just as prevalent in the immediate families of veterans living with PTS. Our focus should be on promotion of the resources we have to help those struggling and to educate the public on them as well."

Some suggestions she gives to make this happen include holding a veteran/military resource fair, asking a qualified speaker to address your meeting about su***de prevention, PTS and Secondary PTS or promoting the 988 (then press 1) Su***de Prevention and Crisis Lifeline.

As a reminder, September is Su***de Awareness Month and it's already right around the corner, which makes this an idea time to start planning ahead for an event, project or promotion that helps to increase awareness and offer support.

We are counting down the National winners of our three art contests starting on Saturday, July 18. Each day leading up to National Convention, we will share National award-winning works from the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest and Illustrating America, concluding with the National first-place winners of both the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest and 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest on July 25.
