The Board of Directors of the Matthew Five Eight Foundation, Inc. was honored today to present a check to Case Del Ray church in San Antonio, Texas. Our families go way back, so when Pastor Oscar Guajardo and I were chatting about a Family Camp the church was putting together, where the entire family attends a church camp together, to learn together and worship together as a family unit, M58 was all in to help sponsor that ministry. God Bless the pastors out there who care about the families they serve and minister to!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ana Avera, one of our Matthew 5:8 scholars. Ana has been a friend for many years. She is an entrepreneur with a tremendous work ethic. She earned her cosmetology license many years ago and has worked in retail haircuts for a big franchise for over a decade. But Ana wanted more. She wanted her own shop with her own clients. So, she started Finest Clips! When she expressed an interest to return to school to earn her barber’s license and be able to offer more services and expand her business, Matthew 5:8 was glad to pay her entire tuition, rewarding her hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. She has completed her coursework, tripled her space, and is now offering facials, straight razor shaves, and much more. Congratulations, Ana!! We are very proud of you!!

From our M5:8 Board President, Larry D. Gonzales: In December of 2021, when I was dying of COVID at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, we didn’t know if I would make the night. But thanks to the power of prayer and the grace of God, after 8 days in ICU, I was discharged. While I was in ICU, I met a young man, Ervin, who helped take care of me. I can’t begin to explain the level of fear, and doubt, and regret, and a host of awful emotions when you are alone and scared of dying. But Ervin took care of. Not even the doctors or nurses came into my room very often, but Ervin brought me my food and water and towels and whatever else I needed. What I REALLY needed was company. I needed a person to sit and talk to me. That whole “dying alone” with COVID scenario will go down as one of humanity’s biggest mistakes. I know. It was almost me. Ervin even sat with me and watched college football bowl season. I got to know him — Austin native, the first in his family to graduate from a 4 year University. He graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Biology and wanted to be a phyiscian’s assistant. I told him, “if I survive this, and you get into PA school, I’m paying for your first semester.” Over a year later I received a text. He was accepted to PA school at The University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio. So today we drove to San Antonio and the board of directors of M5:8 delivered his check to him. What a great guy. We wish him the very best and all the success in the world!!

The Board of Directors at the Matthew Five Eight Foundation, Inc. have been a part of the disability community for nearly 30 years. Several years ago we learned about the incredible Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG), where “adults with special needs contribute to the world.”

Thank you, Darla Shetley for inviting us to join with you and the BiG family once again in 2022!!

From their website, “BiG is a God-centered vocational community that provides meaningful work, a sense of belonging, dignity and respect for adults with functional disabilities. Our Citizens are empowered to become artisans, bakers, gardeners, cardmakers, and more. As a non-profit, 100% of proceeds return to help create a bright future for adults with special needs.”
