Relationships that 'heel' - Canines 4 Comfort is a 501(c)3 providing trained dogs to support mental health treatment and wellness. Canines 4 Comfort trains and places psychiatric service dogs with individuals experiencing PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health diagnoses. The majority of these recipients are veterans and children. Canines 4 Comfort trains and places therapeutic facility

dogs for schools and first responder teams in our communities. These specially trained dogs work with social services to defuse highly emotional situations and provide a calm and nurturing environment. With our first responder teams, these dogs bring goodwill to neighborhoods, provide relief and decompression to staff when dealing with serious situations, and assist with witness and victim interviews and debriefings. Canines 4 Comfort provides resources, training, education, care, and support to our clients and the communities we serve. We also offer a professional program for our trained and in-training canines to visit and provide dog therapy to others. Services provided by Canines 4 Comfort are free; however, as a nonprofit organization, we rely solely on the generosity of community donations to help us achieve our mission. Our efforts focus on training our existing dogs and fulfilling the needs of those on our waitlist. Currently, we cannot assist with training dogs that have not been sourced or evaluated by Canines 4 Comfort staff.

Milestone Moment: More Than Just a Friendly Face

As the school year winds down, we wanted to share a beautiful story for Facility Dog Friday. We love seeing how our trained dogs bring smiles to the hallways and help students feel comfortable and ready to learn, but their true impact often goes even deeper—sometimes leading to profound, life-changing milestones.

Earlier this year, a student at one of our partner schools was struggling with an overwhelming fear of dogs—to the point where even a glimpse of the school's facility dog in the hallway would trigger an immediate panic response. In the beginning, the school's handler frequently had to duck into nearby rooms with the dog just to give the student safe space.

But the school’s dedicated staff and handler saw an opportunity to help. With parental permission to actively work with the student and the dog, they used having a full-time facility dog on campus to patiently practice gentle, controlled exposure throughout the year.

Change didn't happen overnight. It happened in tiny, hard-won increments:
Step 1: Moving from panic to staying calmly in the same hallway.
Step 2: Looking in the dog’s direction without distress.
Step 3: Feeling safe enough to acknowledge the dog by name.
And recently, those small steps turned into a massive leap. For the very first time, this student walked up and gently pet the school's facility dog.
When you see a facility dog on campus, it’s easy to just see the wagging tails and the casual greetings. But stories like this remind us that these dogs are powerful therapeutic tools. This milestone moment was made possible because a dedicated school handler and staff had the patience to turn everyday hallway moments into a year-long triumph for a resilient student.
These breakthroughs remind us that the small, often unnoticed changes add up to life-changing differences. As the school year wraps up, we hope this story brings you some renewed energy and joy.

Happy Facility Dog Friday, and here’s to celebrating every milestone!

Time flies when you’re growing into a life-changing partner! 🥹🐾

Swipe to see Pearl and Cash shortly after they came home in June 2025, compared to the amazing dogs they are today. They’ve traded in a bit of that puppy fuzz for some serious skills!

While the physical transformation is adorable, the real magic is the incredible community effort behind them. A massive amount of dedicated training goes into shaping a future Psychiatric Service or Facility Dog. It’s about building intense focus, emotional intuition, and the ability to remain a calm, grounding presence in high-stress environments.

None of this would be possible without our phenomenal puppy raisers. 💙

They are the ones putting in the daily work—navigating the sleepless puppy nights, practicing public access manners, mastering socialization milestones, and pouring endless love into Pearl and Cash to get them ready for their future jobs supporting mental health. It truly takes a village!

Every task these two master is a testament to their raisers' dedication. Join us in giving a huge shout-out to the volunteers who help make the Canines 4 Comfort mission possible! 🙌👇

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we could share stats or facts—but nothing speaks louder than a life truly changed.

Healing doesn't happen in isolation, and sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is reach out. To wrap up this important month, we are incredibly honored to share these raw, powerful words from Sonny—our very first service dog placement—on how opening up and finding the right partner changed everything.

"Mental Health Awareness Month is an important reminder that nobody has to go through their struggles alone. On a personal level, I dealt with PTSD for years and refused to get help. By the time I finally decided to reach out through the VA, it was almost too late. Asking for help was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it ended up changing my life.
Canines 4 Comfort came into my life, and I became their first service dog placement on May 11, 2019. Since then, my life has changed dramatically. I’m able to go to concerts, ball games, and larger events again. I’ve even stepped into the role of military liaison with Canines 4 Comfort.
I’ve also found hobbies and passions that I truly enjoy like woodworking, scuba diving, volunteering, and baseball umpiring. There’s so much more I’ve been able to do and accomplish, and I owe a lot of that to Canines 4 Comfort.
Mental health is important, and asking for help is not weakness. There are people who care, resources that can help, and hope for a better future. Sometimes taking that first step can change everything."

Happy Facility Dog Friday! 🐾
We are continuing our celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month with a look back at a very special visit from last week!

Our facility dog, Eddie, and his handler headed over to the Youth Prevention Department at A Safe Place to spend some time with the kids in their after-school program. While Eddie did what he does best—bringing instant smiles and a comforting presence to the room—his handler gave a wonderful presentation on the incredible power of the human-animal bond and how closely it connects to mental health and wellness.

Seeing the youth connect with Eddie was a beautiful reminder of why these visits matter so much. Dogs truly have a unique way of helping people lower their guards, decompress, and feel supported.

A huge thank you to everyone at A Safe Place for hosting, and to these amazing kids for welcoming Eddie and his handler with open arms! 💛

Check out some of the sweet moments from the visit below! 👇📸

The energy at Lakes Community High School has been absolutely amazing! 🦅✨ We loved hanging out with everyone last week, and we had just as much fun coming back to visit again today!

With final exams right around the corner, our wonderful teams—Belle, Ryan, and Cash—dropped by to bring some much-needed comfort, joy, and unconditional love to the hardworking students and staff.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we know just how stressful this time of year can be. Taking a moment to pause, pet a dog, and breathe can make a world of difference. Because let’s face it: mental health matters, and sometimes a wagging tail is the best medicine. 🐕💚

Our handlers had the absolute best time swapping stories! Thank you to everyone who shared pictures and told us all about your own beloved pets at home—hearing about your furry family members brought the biggest smiles to our faces.
Good luck on finals, Eagles! You've got this! 💪📚
